Jolted out of a deep sleep, Cindy's mother makes her way wearily across the hall, repeating a now fami- liar pattern. Will this attack end in another dash to the Emergency Department? She thinks back over many other frightening, sleepless - nights, and wonders just how long thé fatigue, frustration and anxiety will continue. Cindy's problem is not unique. There are at least half a million known asth- matics in Canada, and the numbers are increasing. Because asthma is a chronic condition, involving many different factors, it must be dealt with on a daily basis and at the family level. If not kept in perspective, its psycho-social impact on the family unit may be devasta- ting, particularly if the asth- matic child begins to use asthma as a way of manipu- lating other family members. The Family Asthma Programs offered by Durham Region Lung Asso- ciation aim to break this cycle of fear and anxiety, through parent education and group support. The next scheduled Course will begin on Sunday, September 16th, at the Iroquios Park Arena, Whitby, running for seven consecutive Sundays, from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Partici- pating children (ages be- tween 5 and 12), will be taught breathing exercises and relaxation techniques which assist in the control of asthmatic attacks, the symptoms of which are often aggravated by fear as breathing becomes in- creasingly difficult.
