18-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 15, 1979 SRO SP » Seniors overpower Pontypool 11 - 5 by Danny Millar For three innings it looked as though the game between Port Perry Canadian Tire and Pontypool Generals would be a cliff hanger as the teams were deadlocked at five. It did not turn out that way, however, as Port scored four runs in the fourth and went on to win 11-5 on Wednesday, August 8, at Port Perry. Colin Wackett started the fourth inning raily when he reached base on an infield single. He was sacrificed to second on Don Phinney's bunt. An error by shortstop Ralph Hyland on Phil Cochrane's drive put runners on the corners. Wackett scored on second baseman Wayne Hunt's error. Wackett scored on a passed ball and another miscue by Hyland 'allowed Doug Scott and Jay Williams to cross the plate. It was by far the sloppiest inning of the game. Pontypool made five errors in the match. Pontypool iniated the scoring with two runs in the second off righthander Phil Cochrane but these tallies were matched by Port in the home half on the same inning. The Generals held the lead briefly in the third as left- handed pitcher Brent Fallis singled in a run. Paul Richardson followed with a two out, two run home run to centerfield, the shallowest part of the Joe Fowler Park. Port Perry tied the score again in the bottom of the third. They got two runs as Williams and Ron Redman scored when a Generals outfielder badly misplayed Bill St. John's fly ball. St. John ended up on third base from where he was delivered on a single by Charley Durward. Port Perry's final scores came in the seventh as Cochrane opened with a triple off new pitcher Hyland and then scored on an error on the same play. His hit drove in Phinney who had preceeded him on the base paths. Port Perry had 17 hits off the Generals' hurlers, and Port made three errors. Pontypool managed eight hits off Cochrane and made at least five mistakes. Three of these were commited by Hunt. The Pontypool mound duo struck out six hitters, twice as many as Cochrane. Jay Williams, who has become a regular first baseman in the past few weeks and is doing an excel- lent job, had a good evening at the plate. He managed three hits in five trips, as did St. John. Port Perry is now one game over .500 with 11 wins and ten losses. They have four games remaining and are virtually assured of a playoff spot. Eight teams to compete in Ball Hockey tourney by Paul Beare With one week remaining in the Ball Hockey League, the overall standings have really tightened up. Last Monday's action saw the Flames burn the Bulldogs 7-5, and Brians dump the Warriors 6-1. This means that the Warriors, Flames and Bulldogs are all tied for top spot with 13 points. Brians are in second place with 12 points. Therefore, first place is up for grabs. The Packers at this stage cannot make the playoffs, which begins August 20th at 7:00p.m. at the New Arean. The contest took place at the Lakefront Park in Port which is one of the smallest ball yards in this area. Somewhat surprisingly there were no home runs hit but several did bounce high off the fence. The park is slightly akin to Fenway Park in Boston in that the fences are short but very high. Uxbridge also notched two runs in the fourth and one in the sixth. But the most successful session for the visitors was the second when they pounded Port righthan- der Harris McClure. John Yandt singled then scored on BobVanderslaght's base hit that bounced past left fielder Mark Hunter. Vanderslaght came home on an infield out. Pitcher Rob Powell com- pleted the circuit via Don Simmonds' single and then Gord Simmonds tripled in two runs. Uxbridge added two runs two rounds later when Dave Barkey singled with two out. Barkey counted his team's final run in the sixth when he tripled and was driven in on Yandt's safety. Port Perry tallied their only run in the fourth when Mark Hunter led off with a single. He advanced a base on an infield out and scored on Harris McClure's single when first baseman Gord Simmonds made a high throw to the plate. The Durham Softball League, also know as the "Bush League", is a loop that is striving for respec- tability. Much of that credi- bility was lost three weeks ago when rain washed away a league tournament. In the resulting chaos, the final between Port Perry and the Greenbank Gamblers has yet to be played. ~ The league had its slightly tarnished image restored when the Port Perry squad performed strongly in the recent Canadian Tire Men's Softball Tournament here in Port Perry. This team made two key additions of pitchers from Oshawa and added players from Prince Albert's team in the circuit and made it all the way to the semi- finals before bowing to eventual winners Sunder- land Harvesters. The calibre of softball presented by the Durham League is markedly lower than that of the Lake Scugog League but still very enter- taining. The biggest differ- ences in quality is in the batters. The pitching and ® catching in the Scugog loop is far superior. Several players - Colin Wackett, Danny McKee, Randy McLeod - to name three, compete in both associations. 20D DOD OD. 2.0.0 DDD DODD D DODD DRIVING SCHOOL Zenith 77370 (Evenings) DODD DDD L DDD PLILLLLDDDLIDDIIDISOODIEIIDSEE8 Let Experience Be Your Teacher FUTURA 985-2094 (days) Established since 1969 PV OV VV PVP VIVO OTTO UU storage lid, DURHAM ROAD *8, R.R.*1, PORT PERRY, ONT. 985-7890 4 J.R.I.
