PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 15, 1979 -- 31 Committe of Adjustment too soft? asks councillor Council to appeal three property variances Scugog Township council has taken the unusual step of launching appeals against three recent decisions of the gocal committee of adjust- ment. By a vote of four to two, council agreed to appeal the three committee decisions to the Ontario Municipal Bd., a move which could cost the Township up to $1000 in legal fees as a lawyer will have to attend the OMB hearing on t nalf of the Township. Area councillor Jerry Jackman introduced the motion to appeal and he got support from councillors Richard Drew, John Will- iams and John Wolters. Reg- ional councillor Reg Rose and Don Crosier voted again- st the motion. Councillor Jackman said at the meeting that all three of the committee of adjust- . ment decisions now under appeal were passed last month despite the fact the council had recommended against them. When an application for minor variance is made to the committee of adjust- ment, the Scugog council first comments on the applic- ations, and in two of the cases the council recommen- ded that they not be granted. In the third case, council turned down motions not to object or comment. One of the variances now under appeal involves a property in Kent Estates in Port Perry where the owner was granted a reduction in the side-yard allowance from six feet to 2.7 feet to permit expansion of a single car garage. The second variance under appeal was granted to an owner of an existing house on Queen Street which reduced the minimum lot size front- age from 50 feet to 36 feet, and the third appeal involves a second house on a farm in ¢ memTire| | MARIOBRIENZA | | HAULAGE WE LLS Sales & Service Masonry Contractor CLEAN E D Farm Tire Specialists Stone - Brick - Block Work -LIMESTONE - Port Pery- Ontario Fireplace - SAND - GRAVEL - 986-4678 or 728-8180 985-8665 Custom Buitlomes -- MIKE MOLE Additions FOR FREE ESTIMATES CALL 985-7440 985-2680 Port Perry ¢ Nigh © Stable *Boarding Facilities * Training & Instruction *Horses for Sale - DOUG & PENNY COOK (416)985-2025 FURS Remodel or Buy o Shirley Road, R.R.2, Port Perry, Ontario. The applicant in this case was granted severance for the property conditional on the local committee of adjustment agreeing to the minor variance. The move by council to appeal the three decisions to the OMB is an unusual one, and councillor Reg Rose said after the meeting that he doesn't believe the variances granted are serious enough to warrant the appeals and the eost to the Township. In support of his motion, councillor Jackman said the council should let the OMB decide if the committee of adjustment "is being too soft or the council is being too tough" when it comes to minor variances to zoning by-laws. The committee of adjust-' ment is made up of three members appointed by coun- cil, Howard Hall, Fred Olsen and Norm Mairs, and has the legal power to grant minor variances to zoning by-laws. But will they fly? There is nothing plain about the paper planes that will compete August 23, 24, and 25 in the Ontario Science Centre's "Build a Better Paper Airplane" contest. Using a sheet of plain (as in ordinary 8'2"'x11"" typing paper, contestants are challenged to design a paper airplane that can go the furthest distance possible; is accurate in its flight; remains in flight as long as possible and is decorated in an original and creative way. " Entrance in the competi- tion is in three categories - Junior, Senior and Open. Junior Class is for those aged 15 and under. Senior is for those 16 and over and Open Class has no age restriction. Contestants who enter in the Open Class, in addition to paper, can use glue; staples; tape; paper clips and card- board in making their planes. Those wishing to participate in the paper plane contest should contact Brian Wetstein or Mike Alexander at the Ontario Science Centre at 429-4100 ext. 218. Arthur Latcham passes away Mr. Arthur Latcham pass- ed away last week. A wealthy industrialist in his eighties, Mr. Latcham was well known for his don- ations to communities for public buildings and other facilities. Several years ago, he con- tributed about $40,000 for the construction of the Latcham Centre in Port Perry, and numerous communities in southern Ontario benefited from his generosity.
