Fo AN Siar babii nr Sachi critical in car crash A young Oshawa man in critical condition was trans- ferred to Sunnybrooke Hos- pital Monday evening follow- ing a car accident which left a three foot long wooden splinter impaled in his neck. The splinter, about two inches in diameter, was part of a fence the car smashed through after it went out of control and left the Island road about one mile north of the Highway 7A intersection. The young man was taken first to Port Perry Hosptial and transferred almost im- mediately to Toronto by the air ambulance emergency helicpoter. A spokesman at Sunny- brooke Hospital said late Monday evening that the injured man's condition is considered critical and that he went into surgery immed- iately on arrival at the hos- pital. A physician at Port Perry Hospital said the injured man was consious when the helicopter drrived. He had lost some blood but the wooden splinter missed the spinal cord, windpipe and main blood vessels to the brain. The accident occurred about 6:00 p.m. Monday and police later that evening were not releasing the name of the seriously injured youth who was a passenger in a car driven by Darren Lavoie, 17, of Gibb Street, Oshawa. Lavoie was not injured in the accident. A second passeng- er whose name was also withheld by police Monday evening was treated for head cuts at Port Perry Hospital and released. He was also from Oshawa. A spokesman for Durham Region Police said the car was southbound on the Is- land road at a high rate of speed and crashed through the fence on the west side of the road, finally coming to rest about 600 feet from where it left the road. Scugog boards up hazard houses Scugog Township will take immediate steps to board up three partially completed houses in Port Perry in an effort to make them less of a hazard for young children. Council made the decision Monday after building in- spector Bob Kenny said that notices sent out last month to make the houses more safe have been ignored by the construction company. Mr. Kenny said the notices had given Emedi Construct- 'ion of Willowdale until Aug- ust 9 to make the partially, completed. houses less of a safety hazard. He said there has been no work done on the houses, and he has received no reply to his registered letter sent July 27. Councillor Richard Drew introduced the motion to have the Township Roads department board up the houses, and the cost of this work will be levied against the taxes of the three prop- erties involved. Three weeks ago, coun- cillor Drew told council that he inspected one of the houses in question on Perry Street, and found several areas where a youngster could be seriously hurt. Mr. Kenny told council that two houses under construction on Simcoe Street also present a safety hazard with about a foot of water in the base- ments.
