8 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 15, 1979 Times have changed at the gas pumps Ten years ago, a girl pumping gas and checking oil at your favourite service station would have been a bit of rarity. Not so, any more. Like many jobs and occupations that at one time were almost the exclusive domain of men, women and girls "manning" the gas pumps are now pretty much a common sight. In Port Perry, there are at least half a dozen young ladies "working the pumps" at several service stations, and in talking with the Star last week, the girls all said that their job is "no big deal." "I don't have any prob- lems with this job," said Brenda Birkett, 20, who works a 50 hour week at Flieler's B.P. station on Lilla Street. "It's just a little tough being on your feet all day long, especially in the sum- mer when we are really busy," she said. Brenda, who has complet- ed grade 13, and hopes to go on to college or university, started work on a part time basis a couple of years ago, but it soon turned into a full time job. "I started working a cou- ple of years ago at a gas station on Highway 35," she said. "I enjoy the work. It is a little tough in the winter, and when we're really busy on the weekends and never seem to get a chance to sit down for a minute." Rose says the customers seem to have accepted the fact that girls are pumping gas. "We get the odd com- ment, but it's part of the job to be friendly towards the customers." She has always had an interest in cars. Her boy- friend is a mechanic, and Rose says that someday she'd like to work as a mechanic herself. Linda Smith of Nestleton, also works at the XL station but on a part-time basis. Linda might be considered a _ real veteran having started pumping gas in Lindsay about ten years ago. "I kind of got into it by accident," she says. "I was working in a 24-hour gas station restaurant, and when things got really busy at the pumps I'd help out." Attitudes have changed a / To The Canadian National Exhibition lot in the past ten years, says Linda. She admits it's a little tougher in the hot, humid weather, and sometimes it is tough on the feet. At Taylor's Texaco on Highway 7A, Kathy Martin- son, 19, of Seagrave is put- ting in a 46 hour week during the summer months, and hopes to take a recreation or business course at Waterloo University this fall. "I like the work. It's a good job for me," she said. 'Once in a while I'll get a snide remark from a custom- er, but nothing serious. Most of them seem to accept the fact that girls are working on the pumps." She does say that every so often she will have a custom- er who watches very care- fully when she checks the oil "just to make sure I know what I'm doing." All of the girls the Star talked to last week took a serious attitude towards their work. They said they enjoy meeting the public, and the fact that they happen to be female doesn't make any difference on whether or not they do a good job. 'Sure, I like this work," said Rose. "I really don't think I'd be bery happy sitting in an office ail day behind a typewriter."
