NE RA ers BS NE CR BTR on TO Pe tp 3 DR rl wn eam LTE 12-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, August 29, 1979 Scugog Island news by Mrs. Earl Reader Saturday was quite a day for weddings that concerned Island people. Joan (Healey) and Brian Stainton had their reception at the Latcham Centre where the "Head" U.C.W. catered. These ladies were pleased to again chat with the Alvin Heayn family presently of Haliburton. Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Love were guests at an Ottawa wedding for a student who had been on the bus tour to the United Nations a few years ago. This tour is sponsored every year by the Rebekah Lodge and Mrs. Love had been assistant supervisor. Many friend- ships were made and many of these students are now finding new interests in marriage. The Loves have been involved with two of the weddings so far this year. At this time we would like MacDONALD AT MURRAY WILSON SHOES to congratulate our "Head" Island girl, Kathy Irvine for being chosen as one of the students to enjoy the tour this year. The Nelson Reader and Doreen Ashbridge families were invited guests at the wedding of their sister Mary's daughter in Peter- borough on Saturday. Their family being Mary and Bob Dowson. Angus Wilkinson has now had 3 weeks in Port Perry Makes dolls out of dried apples Apples aren't only for eating. Mrs. Ragnhild Glenn of Pickering demonstrated this during a craft show last Sunday at the Scugog Shores Historical Museum. Mrs. Glenn uses dried apples to make the head, hands and feet of small dolls, an art she believes origina- ted with North American Indians. It's quite a simple process, according to Mrs. Glenn. Take a good size firm apple (the Spy and King varieties are best), peel it, carve the face, rub with lemon juice to keep from going brown, then either dry it naturally in the air for five or six weeks, or pop it in a low oven for a couple of days. Wylie as guest speaker. (Turn to page 14) must be removed before drying. Then make a wooden frame for the doll's body, and cut clothing of any design or colours, depending on what kind of creation you want to end up with. Since the apple face shrinks and wrinkles with drying, Mrs. Glenn's dolls mostly depict elderly people, but she has made a Santa Claus and his elves and even a modern hockey player as a custom order for a friend. Mrs. Glenn first saw the "apple head dolls" at a museum near Kingston several years ago and after a little experimentation on her part, has been making several each month since then. | Once the clothing has been put on the doll, the face is varnished and painted with eyes and a little make-up. "It's really just a hobby for me," she says. "I make each one by hand and would never consider mass produ- cing them. That would take all the fun out of it."
