From tine to time, mem- bers of Scugog Township council receive complaints from irate taxpayers claim- ing that garbage collection service is not as good as it should be. On Monday night, Town- ship garbage collector Bill Holland reversed the tables somewhat as he gave council an earful of a few of the problems he encounters picking up the trash at some of 2500 Scugog homes and businesses. Mr. Holland told council, for example, that on a recent Monday morning, one rest- aurant in downtown Port Perry had left 80 bags of trash to be picked up. He admitted that was the high- est number of bags ever, but 5252 quality products and expert service, chooses its dealers with care and is proud to recommend our newest representative to the chain saw buying public. Member of council were a little surpris- ed. Under the terms of the contract Mr. Holland has with the Township for trash collection he is-only requir- ed to pick up 10 bags of trash from any business establish- ment, including restaurants. He then listed serveral other restaurants in Port Perry all of which, he said, leave out many more than 10 bags on garbage day. "Sure I pick up all the bagss," he told council. "I don't want to leave any and get people's back up." "It doesn't really take that much more time to pick up 80 bags," he said. "But it fills the truck a lot faster." Some members of council suggested to him that he should be charging extra for each bag over the ten spelled out in the contract, and he agreed. : It is not just business which create extra work. On one pick-up recently, Mr. Holland said that one in five homes in Port Perry left more than the five bags of trash, which is the number he is required to pick up under contract from each home. Mr. Holland said that one cottager once left 100 bags of leaves to be picked up. The contract says two bags of leaves. Mr. Holland told council that he has now started to pick up trash in the Apple Valley subdivision, which is not required in his contract. People complain that gar- bage collection is late, but he told council that some people fill the bottom of a garbage bag with broken glass, and of course it breaks open the minute it's picked up, spill- Nuclear meeting The Durham Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility will hold its' next meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Monday September 10 at Adelaide House of the Oshawa YWCA.
