22 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., September 5, 1979 Seniors win one game in Lob Ball tourney by Danny Millar Port Perry's Senior fast- ball team, Canadian Tire, competed in its first Lob Ball tournament of the year in Oshawa, on the first week- end in September. They were knocked out in three games, winning one, in the double elimination meet. The clinching game for Port came on Sunday, Sep- tember 2 when they dropped .a 9-7 nod to Sunnyside Park in eight innings, one inning over regulation limit. Port Perry led 7-5 going into the bottom of the sev- enth and came within one pitch of winning the game. With runners on second and third, two out and two strikes on the batter, a single to right field tied the score and forced the extra innings. Sunnyside won it in the eighth on Greg Golgorn's two run homer to right. The giant killer against Port was left fielder Walt Tarazvich who hit two round trippers, both with a man on board. His initial clout came in the home half of the first frame when he pounded a Ron Bryant delivery over Charley Durward's head in left. His second wallop came in the sixth after Port Perry had put on an exaggerated shift to left, which included second baseman Doug Scott playing in shallow right cen- ter: Tarazvich powered a lob over _centerfielder Bill Owen's head. This major score came with two out as { did the first. Port Perry counted three run outbursts in the first and sixth innings. Ken Bryant, who did a remarkable job in running down fly ball after fly ball from the rover posi- tion, led off with a single and jogged into second on Bill St. John's safety. An infield hit by Mark Lee, who was the only hitter from Port to strike out in the meet, sur- rounded lefty Jude Cassidy. Two runs crossed the plate SAVE THOUSANDS OF $3$559$55$$ ON 1978 & 1979 VW & GMC AMPERS on Ken Jeffrey's base hit and Lee scored on a bad throw to third base. Jeffrey was one of three players imported by Port Perry for the tournament. Ron Bryant who pitched both losses and Ken Sweetman who hurled the win, were the others. Durward scored in the sec: ond when Ron Bryant singl- ed with runners on the corn- ers. Durward also was a defensive standout in the outfield, particularly in the first match. ; Port Perry's single victory came in their second game on Saturday, September 2, when they pounded two Ux- 20 TO CHOOSE FROM ALL VW Campers are Westphalia factory equip- ped standard or automatic transmissions, dining table, ice box or fridges, generator, water tank, sink, counter top, utensil cabinet, clothes closet, 110 volt, roof luggage rack, AM-FM radio, sleeps 4 adults and one child. 20 TO CHOOSE FROM ALL GMC units are Curtis conversions on ¥% ton chassis, automatic transmission, power steering and brakes, equipment includes - 4 burner stove, 2 way fridge, chemical toilet, independent pro- pane heater, 2 dining tables, counter space, closets, AM-FM stereo, sleeps four adults. beige. Port Perry jumped into a four run lead which the Hornets matched in the bot- tom of the fifth. And then came the explosion. Before Uxbridge registered three -outs in Port Perry's sixth, eleven runners came. home and starter Harry Assinck was removed for George Nendick. The first three men that Assinck faced in his toughest inning - Lee, St. John and Jeffrey -- all singled. As- sinck walked in a run on four balls to Don Phinney. A handful of base hits and a two run, four bagger by Phil Cochrane and Port found themselves with an 11 run lead. Sweetman allowed three runs over the final two sessions. He ended the game on a strikeout, which is very rare in Lob Ball. In the tournament opener Port Perry was toppled 6-1 by Candia of Oshawa. A strong pitching performance by Frank Surrette handcuff- ed Port. Surrette aided his own cause when he doubled in two runs in the sixth. Candia also added two points in the fourth and one each in the first and second rounds, Port replied witha a run in the top of the final frame as leadoff hitters Jay Williams and Bill St. John singled and Williams counted on Kevin Walker's base hit. The game took less than an hour to play. None of the three games that Port Perry part- icipated in took more than an hour and a half. Port Perry player-coach Doug Scott has reiterated several times over the seas- on that his team plays for fun. In the most recent venture by his squad this was never more evident. In that respect the tournament must be regarded as a suc- cess for the team. The scoreboard would indicate a different story. Ashburn news by Mrs. E.
