2 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., December 5, 1979 Viet refugee family arrives in Township Scugog Township's second family of Viet Nam "Boat People" has arrived. The seven members of the family, including an elderly woman and three young children were met at Toronto Airport last Friday by members of the Immaculate Conception Church, which is Christie steps out From page 1- are periods of frustration and anxiety. She cited the drawn-out negotiations with teachers unions, suggesting that the procedure is too long and time consuming. Both the elementary and secondary school teachers in Durham have been with- out a contract since the end of August, and negotiations are presently underway with the Board. She also said she regrets that there is an apparent lack of appreciation on the part of the public for the good work that is going on in the schools. "Everybody is quick with the criticism, she said. 'But only rarely do we ever get words of praise." Although the Durham Board has been one of just six in Ontario that has not experienced a decline in enrolments, shifting popula- tion patterns have left the Board facing the paradoxi- cal problems of having over- crowded class-rooms in sponsoring the family. According to a spokesman for the Church, the Diep family left Viet Nam by boat more that six months ago, and after spending a month at sea, have been in a refu- gee camp in Indonesia for the past five months. 'The Church has found a house just outside Port Perry for the family to live, and the two young girls aged eight and five are expected to start school in the next few weeks, along with a_fourteen year old orphaned boy who is a cousin of the family. Along with the mother and father, there is an elderly sister of the husband, and a 20 year old sister of the wife. The Church spokesman told the Star that while the sponsoring group has found a house for the family, along with clothing and other necessities, the group would like help in securing employ- ment for the adults, and anyone who may be able to help can call 655-4752. Mrs. Christie predicted that in the next five years, boards of education will face increasing pressure from the public to improve the level of "education, and at the same time control or reduce spen- ding. After four years in the chairman's seat, a return to the job of trustee will be a significant change for Mrs. Christie. While she said she wants to look at things from a different perspective, she also wants to continue in an active role, and said she will seek" appointment to the Board's property, budget and personne] committees. When asked about a rumour that she might be a possible Conservative candidate for provincial poli- tics should a vacancy come up in the York-Durham riding now held by Bill Newman, Mrs. Christie said she has given no thought to the idea, and was not even aware that her name had been mentioned. yes TX 1.
