The Senior Redmen split a pair of games in the Durham Region tournament while the midgets hammered Ux- bridge 62-35 in an exhibition game. The juniors dropped a 47-43 squeaker to the Tigers in another pre-season set to. The senior Redmen bowed out of the tourney on Satur- day, December 8 with a 46-39 loss to arch rival Pickering Trojans. Last year the Redmen beat Pickering three times, twice in cham- pionship finals en route to taking LOSSA and COSSA laurels. It became evident shortly after the opening tip-off that the match would be decided on rebounding. All star centre John Christenson staked the Trojans to an early lead in this department taking the majority of the defensive boards. As a result Pickering jumped into an early lead, forcing Port Perry to take a time out at 5:44 of the first half. The tournament matches consis- ted of two 16 minute halfs not the usual four quarters. Christenson played a strong first half defensively. He blocked four shots, including one of Redmen centre George Cope's. Late in the period Cope, the Port Perry captain, showed his frustration and was given a technical foul. The Redmen came on late in the half but Pickering held on to their early lead to go up seven points at half time. The Redmen started quickly in the second half. They used a full court press that had the Trojan guards confused. Pickering was caught twice on ten second violations. Four minutes into the frame the Redmen had narrowed the gap to one point. With 6:50 to go Greg Fedyk hit a lay up shot and the Redmen went ahead for the first time in the game, 35-34. Trojans fortunes took a turn for the worse when starting guard Mason injured an ankle with 4:34 to go and was removed from EIVIT The one you're looking for. the contest. Shortly after the injury Pickering regained the lead on a pair of foul shots. Late in the game, Port's hot shooters, Cope and Mike Patton turned cold. They both missed shots that bounced off the rim or back- board, that, had they gone in, would have turned the game around. - The Trojans capitalized on these opportunities to resume command. Port Perry took their last two time outs with 51 seconds left and the Trojans leading 42- 37. A three point play by Jim Rider with 12 seconds to go gave Pickering their first win in their last four games with Port. On Friday, December 7 the Redmen played solid basket- ball for about three quarters but sagged in the final minutes against the Bow- manville Redmen. The Port Perry contingent hung on for a 62-58 win. Port Perry jumped out in front five seconds into the game on a Dennis Franssen basket. They never trailed. Cope and Curt Pinkowski played strong games for the Redmen. Pinkowski is getting a shot at a starting forward spot where the Redmen have lost key per- formers Scott Wilbur, Gord Simmonds and Robert Morris to graduation. Both Morris and Simmonds were in attendance at the Picker- ing game. At one point in the opening half Pinkowski hit three field goals in a row. He ended up with 14 points. In the Picker- ing game he managed three. Cope came out with 2:05 remaining in the first half and was replaced by Cam Muir. Muir, like Pinkowski, was a starter on the junior squad last year. Muir played well in his brief stint, as he scored three points. Port Perry held a 37-32 half time lead. Port's Fedyk fouled out at 8:04 of the second half. Bowmanville narrowed the margin to four points, causing Port Perry coach Paul Arculus to put in Patton with :36 remaining. Todd Hooper scored 20 points to lead Bowmanville and teammate Ron King netted 18. Cope had 22 and Franssen, who played an excellent game, added 15. On Thursday, December 6, the Port Perry Redmen's younger teams played host to the Uxbridge Tigers and each school took home a win. The Port midgets scored a resounding 62-35 victory while the juniors lost a 47-43 match. The Uxbridge midgets used the Hamilton Tiger- Cats "Oskie Wee-Wee"' chant before they took the court. . It is hard to believe that in a game where 97 points were scored, only ten were counted in the first quarter. Port grabbed a 6-4 advan- tage. There was more scoring in the second frame as Port nabbed a 20-14 advantage. With 3:59 yet to be contested in the opening half Port Perry inserted five substi- tutes. This practice was employed by both coaches often. At one point in the second Port subbed in four men and Uxbridge five. With less than two minutes left in the game Port Perry led by over 20 points but still decided to use a full court man-to-man press. This type of defence is usually used by teams. trailing a close game. but Port utilized it with success. Scott Patton and Donnie Young each hooped double figures for the Redmen. Patton, younger brother of Mike, had 18 and Young had ten. The junior game was a very even one. With less than three minutes remain- ing Uxbridge led by three points. With a minute and a half to go Jack Postma stole the ball from Todd Wilbur twice and converted lay ups. With :12 left Scott Sinclair missed a technical foul shot that was assessed by Tiger's Todd Hickling, that could have put the Redmen closer. Wilbur led the Redmen scoring with 15 points, Port Perry won the A Championship at an Oldtimers Hockey tournament held at Newcastle on Saturday, Dec. 1. Carl Durward scored his second goal of the evening into an empty net with :57 remain- ing. Durward teamed with cap- tain Tim Thompson and each had two goals and two assists. They played on a line with either Jim Kane or Mark Cleveland. Kane was given a game misconduct when he engaged goalie Ron Spencely in a second period fight. Port Perry added two players, left winger Rick Wallace and defenceman Gerald Lee, to the roster for the exhibition. Lee played well on defence and Wallace distinguished himself by throwing a punch at an opponent with 9:09 left in the first period. Lindsay defeated Port Perry 7-2 on Saturday, December 8 in Lindsay. Jimmy White and Mike Johnson were the Legion- naire marksmen.
