Craig Menzies and Darren Cearns each netted three goals for Port Perry. The Wellington team spent the weekend in Port Perry, competing annual tourna- ment the previous day. The players were billeted with parents of the Port Perry Pee Wees for the night. Port Perry trailed 4-2 late in the first period before centerman Lee Wilbur start- ed a rush and got around the Wellington defence to set up the first Cearns goal at 6:47. The exhibition game consist- ed of three ten minute periods. The goaltending was a key factor in the win. Starter Willie King made a great stop on a breakaway near the end of the first period and another in the second. in the third period Moore may have saved the game when he blanked Wellington with a stick save while he was on the ice. The score was tied at five at the moment. Wellington got its last goal of the game when Ken Forsyth put them into a 5-3 lead with 4:46 to go in the second period by scoring while King was down. But a pair of unassisted goals by Menzies tied the score in the same period. He got the first one on a break down the left wing and shot past goaler Mike Yearwood from a tough angle. This play had concluded a flurry of activity in which King had stopped a breakaway at the Utica-C&B in a goose-egg by Dave Dalton The big game of the day saw second place Utica stick with C & B for a 0-0 tie. This left them just four points behind for the right to represent Port Perry in the Regional Playdowns, here in town March 22-23. Both teams had their chances in the wide-open end to end play, but Keith Fraser for C & B and Don Card for Utica made some excellent saves. along with help from their defensive mates. Emmerson's Insurance moved into sole possession of third place with a.2-0 win over Brians Towing. Emmerson's had a big advantage as Brian's spent a fair amount of time in the penalty box. Menzies was_upended by a defence- man moments after letting the puck go. Right after the goal Port came down the ice and hit a goal post. The Legionnaires controll ed the momentum for the rest of the match, scoring twice and allowing just one excellent chance. It was a turnabout from what usually seems: to happen in the games that the team falls behind in early. On these occasions the players become frustrated and either take bad penalties or wilt. This is part of the reason that the Legionnaires have lost so many one-sided games. Port Perry went ahead 6-5 at 5:08 of the third period after Cearns pocketed a rebound. The initial shot had been taken by Wilbur after a pass from Tim Cannon. Cannon got the insurance goal on a tip in from a Wilbur shot with 39 seconds left in the game. The Legionnairs were thumped 7-1 on Friday, Jan. 18 by Port Hope in their last regular season game. Jim Brown did the most damage for the visitors with a hattrick. The first Port Hope goal was assisted by defenceman Brian Wall, who at 6 foot 1 inch is built like one. Port Perry goalkeeper John Moore made a good glove stop on Richard Brown while the score was tied at 1-1 mid-way through the opening period. Port Hope went ahead with 3:24 left in the opening frame on a Tony Burgess rebound after David Hubbs got around the Legionnaire defensive unit and had a shot on Moore. Brown got his first goal on a power play at 1:29 of the middle session, and then another goal minutes later when Mike Johnson went off for high sticking. At 8:03 of the second period Port Hope removed goalie David Martin and replaced him with William Rado, leading 4-1. Port Hope got its third consecutive goal while Port Perry was shorthanded at 8:27 by Garrent Brown. It was unassisted, one of three such Port Hope scores. Port Hope led 5-1 going into the third period, a frame in which Hubbs and Jim Brown scored.
