The vote by the directors By a vote of 24 to four, Regional council last week approved salary increases for senior Durham management and profes- which will average out to seven per cent. The increases, valued at a total of $291,151 will take effect immediately, and cover about 190 employees who are not unionized. Equalized assessment From page 1 were taxed at less that $100 last year. But under the new system which assesses them at their market value, taxes will be up $300 and $400 this year. Mrs. Robertson said that other kinds of property which will end up paying highter taxes under the new system are cottages and farms which have not had a change in their assessed oe I+ Chief administrative officer Bob Richardson remains the highest paid Regional employee, with a new annual salary of $49,220, an increase this year of $3,220. The Commissioners of the other major departments within the Regional frame- work: finance, works, social services, and legal, all had increases of just under values for as much as two or three decades. It was precisely because many properties have been under-assessed that the new system based on market value was approved by the council last year. Market value assessment puts all property on the same footing so to speak, based on the 1975 real estate value of the properties. The new system does not Escape Winter Boredom! Scugog Township is the third municipality in Durham Region to adopt market value assessment, and there does not appear to be the public protest here that developed in Uxbridge and Newcastle when those municipalities switched to the new system. In Uxbridge Township last year, there were about 700 initial appeals. However, after a series of public information meetings with officials from the provincial assessment office, the number of appeals that went to court was reduced to about 300. However, there no doubt are many property owners in Scugog who will want to appeal their assessments under the new system. Those wishing to launch an appeal must fill out the form on the back of the assessment notice prior to March 7. Appeals will be decided by the Court of Revision which will be held in Port Perry, likely in May. In the meantime, officials from the provincial assess- ment office will be at the Scugog Township munici- pal offices for four days this week starting January 22 to answer questions from the public and explain how the new system works and why it has benn brought into effect in this municipality. The officials will be on hand from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday (January 23 and 24) and all day Saturday, January 26. Mrs. Perry explained that the constitution of the Association spelled out that it should be 'non-partisan' in nature, and the purpose of the organization had been to gather information on municipal matters and organize forums and meetings to present the information to the public. While the Ratepayers presently has about 80 general members, Mrs. Perry agree that there seemed to be a lack of interest in recent months on the part of both members and the general public.
