MoJacks drop third game to Port Hope Panthers by Danny Millar The jinx continued for Port Perry MoJack coach Doug Scott. The Junior C hockey team pilot has yet to win a game with two separate teams in the Port Hope Sports Complex, which is in its first year of operations. Coach Scott's latest junket into the building was a 6-4 loss to the Port Hope Panthers in the third game of the opening playoff round on February 7. Four different MoJacks counted in the scoring column. Darren Jobb and Rob Garrow netted first period markers while Phil Cochrane and Rob Greiner scored later. Forward Grant Jex played a strong game for the Panthers as he accounted for the first goal of the game and chipped in with an assist. His goal came with Greg Dwyer sitting in the penalty box after he tripped Grey Bullen as he was breaking down the right wing. Port Hope was also a man short as Bob Croll was off for high sticking. Jex slid a shot under goaltender Raymond Gibson after taking a pass from Terry Watts in the corner. The contest featured a high scoring centerman from each team in Bullen and Cochrane, and forced the opposing coaches to place another man on him. In both instances it happened to be the team captain, Bill Bridge of Port Perry, on Bullen and Dale Sidey on Cochrane. Sidey did an effective job on the MoJack pivot and Cochrane became frustrated late in the game as the two wrestled briefly at the Port Perry blueline. Port Hope went ahead 2-0 'just 43 seconds after Jex scored when Bullen took a face-off in the Port Perry zone and then scored on a deke after a give and go pass from Jex. Gibson enjoyed a good game between the pipes for Port Perry. He made a total of 52 stops as the MoJacks were outshot 58-25. Gibson was especially tough in the latter stages of the match as he outstopped fellow goaler Joe Pokusa 24-4 over the final 20 minutes. The only goal that Gibson surrendered in the final period came off the stick of center Shawn Wakely at 3:25. The point came at a crucial time as Greiner scored a pretty goal at the two minute mark of the third frame and the MoJacks seemed to be gaining momentum. Greiner slipped between defencemen Craig Jex and Jamie MacInnis and fired the puck under Pokusa. Jobb and Steve Jones assisted. Jones was teamed with Bill Owen along the blueline as they formed one of the more rugged rearguard duos of the series. Bullen was a frequent target of their checking throughout the game. Greiner did the legwork on the first MoJack goal, scored by Jobb at 9:36 after he carried the puck around the Panther net and slipped it out in front for the easy tip in from Jobb. With Dwyer again in the box, this time for roughing, Bob Croll fired a shot into the top of the net after Gibson had earlier made big saves. It came with 1:30 left in the initial period. Garrow got that one back with his wrist shot goal from the point with ten seconds left. Terry Watts finally beat the Port Perry goalkeeper with 4:52 remaining in the middle segment after Gibson earlier had foiled him twice and Bullen once after Bullen stole the puck from Bridge at centre ice. Bullen scored while team- mate Sidey was off for slash- ing with 1:32 to go in the Ask 1 our repredentative. "MR. Bullen went around him for the clear shot. The teams played on even terms for the third period as they each scored once. Port Perry pulled Gibson in the final minute and although they had control in the MoJack end, the Panthers could not score. Leading point getter for the Cats was Watts, who contributed one goal and a trio of assists. Cochrane, Jones, and Greiner each had two points for the MoJacks. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., February 13, 1980 -- 13 Novice win one tournament game On Saturday, February 9, the Pierce Auctioneers took part in the Little N.H.L. fournament meeting the Oshawa Black Hawks for their first game. Nobody took over in this round as both teams were evenly matched. But Port came out the winners by a close 3-2 score. The Black Hawks scored first. Then with quick moves from Jeff Mills he gave Port the first goal. His hard working forwards, Jarrett Harman and Mike Feasby helped him along. On Port's second goal Sean Bradbury made a smart move around a Black Hawk where he saw Mike Sorley in the open who scored on a breakaway. The Black Hawks came back tieing the score. Deep in Port Perry territory Brent McMillan grabbed the puck and passed it to Claire Cornish who put the power on and skated all the way to score the winning goal. In the next game, the Pierce Auctioneers and the Oshawa Bruins duelled in a rubber match hockey game resulting in a 1-1 tie by the end of the third period. Shane Wark stood firm on left wing where he quickly moved the puck to Clair Cornish and with an outburst of speed banged in the first and only goal from the side corner. Well, Oshawa tied it up and overtime was evident. The puck dropped and the Bruins won the face-off and within one minute they scored. The Pierce Auctioneers left a little disappointed. Final score was Bruins 2, Port 1. Coaches Don Steele and Gary McConnell weren't as they knew they gave 100 per cent in hard effort against this team.
