Al Lawrence wins by 6000 votes by John B McClelland Conservative incumbent Allan.. 'Lawrence won his personal battle Monday night in Durham-Northumb- erland, but his party lost the war in 'the rest of the country. ) As expected, Mr. Law- rence easily retained his seat by more than 6000 votes over his closest opponent, but his Vol. 114 No. 13 FL ESE ER CR eS total this time was almost 5000 votes less than he re- ceived in the general election last May. With all but ten polls re- porting as of 11:30 Monday night, the results showed Mr. Lawrence with 17,129 votes. Liberal Ed Schamerhorn ran second with 11,216, while New Democrate Fred Mc- Laughlin polled 9,315 votes. The two fringe candidates » Wednesday, February 20, 1980 in the riding - Libertarian Bob Marttila and Marxist- Leninist Robert Platt - managed to find 367 and 13 votes respectively. OMB land decision appealed to Cabinet A Whitby businessman is appealing directly to the pro- vincial cabinet to have an Ontario Municipal Board decision overturned to allow farm equipment dealership on-Regional Road 2 about three miles south of Port Perry. The appeal to the Cabinet is being made by lawyers for Walter Labanovich, owner of Whitby Auto Wreckers. It is the result of an OMB decision last month which turned down an amendment to the Scugog Township zoning by-law allowing Mr. Labanovich to set up the dealership. " Mr. Labanovich told the Star last week that he hoped he would be able to open the Case dealership this year on the 10 acre parcel on the west side of the Oshawa Road near the Second Concession Road. He stressed emphatically that the plans call for farm equipment dealership only, and he has no intention of setting up an auto wrecking yard. The petition to cabinet says that the Durham Offi- cial Plan allows a farm dealership in all agricultural areas at the discretion of the council of the local munici- pality. Scugog council passed the necessary zoning amendment last year, but four residents living nearby filed a formal objection to the Ontario Municipal Board which upheld the objections at a hearing January 3. In upholding the objec- tions, the OMB accepted the arguments that the site in question is an area 'mainly residential in nature." - The objectors also told the OMB that they feared the establishment of a dealer- ship could have an adverse (Turn to page 2) A disappointed Allan Lawrence speaks to his party supporters Tile drain projects Extra funds for farmers The provincial govern- ment has allocated an additional $65,000 to Scugog Township in tile drain loans. The funds will be distri- buted among nine Scugog farmers for tile drainage projects on their farms. The additional money for the loans was announced last week by the minister of Agriculture, who said the provincial government wishes to clear up the "back- log" of loan applications across the province. The additional $65,000 brings the total in tile drain loans in Scugog to $93,500 for 1979. The money is loaned to farmers at an annual inte- rest rate of six per cent, and while Scugog council had to call a special meeting last Friday to pass a debenture by-law, the money comes from the provincial govern- ment and does not put any burden on local property taxes. The announcement will be welcome news for the nine area farmers who have completed and paid for their tile drain projects, and as members of council passed the by-law last week, several joked that the allocation is an indication that a provin- cial election could be in the works this year. Scugog this year has received two applications for tile drain projects, and it will likely be April before the Township finds out how much its 1980 allocation will ROBERT PLATT 13 votes % 9,315 votes FRED McLAUGHLIN ALLAN LAWRENCE 17,129 votes ED SCHAMERHORN 11,216 votes ROBERT MARTTILA 367 votes +. sce oY - La Br aa Ras, CT a ET ee, RL oY ose A Po a ocd ", ------ A Jee s IPN, IA LN Sad SRA Ex Ne, - XP» NET EAS ow ag eg" LTC he SS & STA EL Ana ee ing nD nd , mat Wr LAE a (5 Cork Ne Coy = $A; " NLT EEE CO el Ce Rn \ A, Jo pe eG PA a SS ..
