Midget hockey finals Pacers even Schomberg series at 1-1 by Danny Millar The Port Perry Menzies Pacers evened their series at one game each as they took a 2-1 cliffhanger over Schomberg on Sunday, Feb. 24th at the Scugog Arena. The game was one of the most entertaining midget contests witnessed at the arena this year. Goaltenders Clay Lovering for Port, and Allen Ross for Schomberg locked horns in a classic duel. Port Perry had almost a dozen chances to put the game away as twice they enjoyed two man advantages. Ross was equal to the task at the visitors . end, with his most dramatic save coming on a first period penalty shot by Joe Williams. Williams had a rough night for the Pacers. He missed another excellent scoring opportunity with three minutes left in the second period after he fired a shot wide. In the third period, with 10:13 to go he was labelled to the ice by Dan Wiederholm and was removed to his dressing room. He showed intestinal fortitude when he returned 1:05 later. He was taken off for good with 3:42 left when he was slashed by - Scott Peaver at the top of the face-off circle in the Schom- berg end. Peaver was given a major slashing, and eject- ed from the match. This killed any chance of a Schomberg comeback because they were forced to play with five men for the rest of the game. Any time a player is thrown out of the contest he receives at least seven minutes in penalties. The game was aggressive throughout as Schomberg exhibited a tough two man forechecking system. Pat Johnson was the recipient of one check in the first period which sent him flying in his own end by Mike Pinder. Todd Blayone scored both Pacer goals from his defence position as he played one of his best games of the play- offs. He netted the first at 4:02 when he took a pass ahead from Paul Storrey, BASEBALL CARDS WANTED Will pay $2. each for style shown (1952 Topps Gum Co., actual size 2 5/8 x 33/4). One minute after Blayone scored Williams was award- ed a penalty shot after he was hauled down after breaking into the clear. He attemptéd to deke Ross and lift a backhand over him but was blocked. Port Perry threatened again late in the period on a slashing penalty against Jim Thomas. They buzzed around Ross, as they did on several occasions through- out the match, but couldn't score. Play went up and down the ice in the second period and an early flurry of activity resulted in the Schomberg marker at the 5:51 mark. Schomberg had a handful of clear shots that Lovering blocked and when Schomberg seemed to lose concentration for a moment Doug Potts took off on a breakaway, but was stopped. Schomberg stormed back and Rick Sweeney slammed in a passout from behind the Farm & Personal INCOME TAX RETURNS Alex J. Brad Warden set up the marker. Blayone got the winner at 12:48 of the second frame when he slipped in from the point to receive a pass from Kevin Long and he fired in one motion, without stopping the puck. The Pacers had more chances with 43 seconds and less remaining in the frame when Warden went off for' slashing. Potts missed a shot in the dying seconds. Port Perry managed to maintain the lead for the final 15 minutes but there were some tense moments. Lovering came up big to stop Mark Matson on a break- away and Schomberg nearly netted a goal in the last minute of frenzied action. With 1:01 left and the teams playing five aside, Ross was removed. Lovering turned away a slap shot from the point and one from his door- step. FIRST GAME In the first game of the series Schomberg used a home ice advantage to double Port 8-4 on a hattrick PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., February 27, 1980 -- 11 from Randy Jenning and two goals from Matson. There were five goals scored in the first period, three of them by Schomberg. Wayne Robin- son and Potts did the damage for the Pacers. Other Port marksmen were Long and Storrey. The first two games of the series were played by the Pacers without their top player, center-defenceman Todd Wilbur. The smooth skating forward was injured in the previous set against Uxbridge. He hopes to be back next week. Trojans whip Rebels 60-47 in quarter-final by Danny Millar Port Perry Midget Rebels put forth a game effort but they were simply over- powered by the taller, faster Pickering Trojans as they were whipped 60-47 in the LOSSA quarter final on Thursday, February 21 at Pickering. The loss means the season has come to a close for Port. Pickering showed good depth off the bench, as they alternated freely in the first quarter. They have at least eight players who could sub in at any time and do as good a job as the starters. Steve Street finished with ten points and he came off the bench. The first quarter was almost half over before Scott Wilson got the point that put Port Perry on the score- board with a foul shot. Port started the match with a half court defence and then switched to a full court man to man. They had problems with the man to man because they were being beaten consistently under their own basket. Guard Donny Young, the strongest Rebel player all season long, scored three field goals to account for most of the Port scoring. He got the first on a shot from the top of the key, the second on a give and go pass from Mark Phillips, and finally banked in a shot at the buzzer. Pickering led 19-7 after eight minutes of play. The Trojans managed to exploit the difference in height under the Port hoop as they fed Street and Mark Van Kiewer underneath for short layups. Van Kiewer finished up the match with 13 points. Port Perry ended the first half down by 12 points but it would have been closer if a Phillips basket with one second to go had not been waved off on a travelling violation. Pickering started with a full court press of their own in the third segment and its effect was to create a 45-32 advantage after the period ended. At one point the Trojans scored four straight points on Port miscues as a result of the pressure. In the final frame Phillips established himself with a handful of rebounds at both ends of the court. He ended the game with 13 points, second highest on the Rebels, trailing Young by 11. After Scott Patton left the team mid-way through the season Phillips has come on to be a solid performer, as a » GL PU Af Th 3 ash HV: TREATY ES 0 A rebounder, scorer, and an: occasional playmaker for Young and Stan Glass. The Midget Rebels were also defeated in their final league contest when they tangled with LOSSA finalists Henry Street Hawks and came up short. Henry held a 15-12 lead after the initial quarter in the game that looked as though it would go either way. For six minutes the teams were tied, first at 10-10 then they exchanged field goals, before Henry Street of Whitby came back with three points. In the first minute of the second period Port Perry tied it up once more but Henry went ahead for good, shortly after. p YOUNG _ _ ~ "S DOMINION HARDWARE MONDAY - WEDNESDAY - FRIDAY PICK UP CENTRE for RON'S SKATE CARE CENTRE 287 DEAN AVENUE - OSHAWA - ONTARIO *Specializing in Regular and Custom Radius Skate Sharpening * Also Sharpening of all Saws, Scissors.
