They won 4-3 in Pickering on February 16 and lost 5-3 at home on Monday, February 18. In the first set to Scott Wallace counted twice for the Broncos while captain John Butler and Todd Menzies notched singles. In the home game, Port Perry fell behifd quickly when Tim Laroche scored at 6:05. It was a matter of the Port Perry defence getting caught flatfooted in front of goaltender Paul Bateman. Ron Rumford took a costly high sticking penalty at 8:56 as Pickering went ahead 2-0 before he returned to the ice. Terry Fitzpatrick did the damage after he was left alone in front. Defenceman Darryl Carnachan made a tremem- dous defensive play that saved Port a sure goal when he stuck his stick out to stop Laroche from slamming in a rebound. Wallace had the best chance of the period for the home side when he managed a shot after a Port Perry play had been broken up after Todd Healey had a pass intercepted that was sup- posed to land on Rumford's stick. Netminder Troy Kilpatrick made the save. Pickering opened the second period with a soft goal when a shot by Leroy St. Peter from the top of the circle in the Port zone managed to sneak in bet- ween Bateman"s pads. The third marker came 3:23 into the session. Todd Healey got one goal back for the Broncos when he tipped in a shot from the front of the goalkeeper after receiving a pass from Rumford, stationed behind the net. Carnochan also got an assist. Wallace had another good scoring drive thwarted when he broke into the clear and hit the goal post. Carnochan, who played one of his best games to date, scored with 35 seconds remaining. The game tightened up when Port Perry scored its third unanswered goal to tie the score with 6:49 remain- ing in the third and last period. Healey hit Rumford with a pass half the width of the ice and Rumford went in to beat Kilpatrick with a deke to his backhand. The Broncos showed spirit in coming back from a three goal deficit but they just couldn't hold off the Picker- ing attackers in the final minutes, perhaps out of fatigue. They were caught on a two on one on the winning Pickering goal when the shot beat Bateman. Butler had the best chance of coming up with the equa- lizer with less than five minutes left in a wild scramble. The play resulted when a Pickering athlete grabbed the puck and was called for delaying the game. The final goal of the game came with Carnochan in the box for tripping. BRONCOS OUT The Broncos were elimi- nated from the best of five round with a 4-3 loss in an ugly game on Saturday, February 23. Two Port Perry players, Karl Beer, and Mike Farrell were thrown out of the game, Farrell with a match penal- ty. Farrell was given the gate with 4:30 left in the game. He and Pickering's Dave Bodley exchanged high sticks and when Farrell was given the only penalty he charged after Bodley and threw a punch at him. Beer was handed a game misconduct in the penalty filled middle session. At one point, Pickering ran into five straight penalties and numbered four men in the penalty box. The game started inno- cently enough when Pete Scott shoved a puck under Bronc netminder Peter Christie at the seven minute mark of the first period. Scott took advantage of a scramble in front of the net and slipped it in as Christie was apparently screened. It came from about 30 feet out as Port Perry was just emerging on a three on one. A defensive lapse by the Broncos was the cause of the second Pickering goal, which came 45 seconds after Carnochan's goal. Keith Thompson won a draw in the Bronco end and skated around the net, passing out to Tim Laroche who was left wide open in front. Two Broncos, John Butler and Scott Wallace, were shaken up in collisions with Pickering skaters in the first two periods. Neither were serious enough to keep them out of the lineup but Wallace did have to be helped off when he was decked by Leroy St. Peter at 2:23 of the second period. Lance Moreton put his Pickering team ahead 3-1 on a break away goal at 7:02 of the second segment. Chris- tie was beaten on a quick, low wrist shot. Goals seemed to come in quick succession in the Broncos last competitive game of the year. Just 28 seconds after Moreton scored, Todd Healey replied for Port Perry. It was a few minutes . after Healey's marker that Pickering ran into its string of infractions. As is usual when a team draws a number of minor penalties in a row, there is a considerable delay while the officials figure out how to record each one, and let the correct player out at the proper time. The first of two lengthy delays occured late Cornish Seniors capture fourney R.H. Cornish Senior Basketball team won the Joseph Gould Invitational Basketball Tournament for 1980. This was the second year in a row that Cornish has won the Gould Trophy. All team members turned in a strong performance throughout the day. In the opening game, Cornish defeated T.R. McEwen from Oshawa 38-4. Cornish then went on to defeat Sunderland 45-11 and Bowmanville 38-18. The final game was a match-up between Cornish and Whitby Senior for the Championship. All members of the team played very well in the 45-12 victory. Special mention to Rob Burnett (top point scorer) and Vaughan McKee (rebounding) along with good effort by Steve Lee, Grant Perry, Mark Penney, Richard Allsop, Dean Stone, Harry Sillen and Mike Connolly made a very successful day. Cornish Cougars will be competing in the upcoming tournaments: Bowmanville Feb. 29 at Durham West, March 1 at Dunbarton High School, Port Perry, March 8 at Port Perry. Bowmanville, in the second period and the other came three minutes into the third. For the second time in the three losses that the Broncos suffered, the home team went down fighting. Healey skated down the left wing and passed off to Butler who was breaking down the middle at 3:32 of the final frame. Butler's shot eluded goaler Troy Kilpatrick and tied the score at 3-3. It came on a power play goal as there were four Pickering attac- kers in the box. Pickering got the winner with 3:12 remaining when defenceman Dave Bodley St. Peter, who relayed it to Jody Spurrell for the wrist shot that counted. Previous to the goal, Christie made 'four straight saves on Pickering attackers as they flooded the Port zone. The best stop of the flurry came on Moreton. Port Perry decided to forego the advancing by round system of the all- Ontario playoffs. Instead, they played a round robin with Pickering and Ux- bridge. Uxbridge was elimi- nated after two losses to Port and one to Pickering. That set up the final between Pickering and Port Perry, took Wallace out of the play which was won in four and fed a cross rink pass to games. ( For the Best Deals on New G.M.
