10-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, March 12, 1980 Sports with Danny Millar R.H. Cornish By Danny Millar The R. H. Cornish A's won their own public school bask- etball tournament on Satur- day, March 8. The day-long event took place on two fronts, at Port Perry High School and R.H. Cornish gymnasia. In the final, R.H. Cornish ousted Joseph Gould of Uxbridge, 39 - 26. Cornish led most of the way before Gould, winner of last week's meet in Bayview Heights, tied the score at 22-22 in the third quarter. "We've had a pretty suc- cessful season. We've won our share of tournaments," says A's coach Rob Smart. Smart also stated that one of the team's assets was that "they move the ball around well", and "'don't depend on just one or two men'. In the second game, the A team thumped Ridgeway, 36 - 10, and followed up with a 44 - 16 trouncing of Oshawa"s Lake Vista in the semi windup. The Cornish A's were very basketball champions impressive in the first game of the tournament when they counted on 16 points by Robert Burnett and defeated Valley View 42 - 11. Burnett sat out much of the second half. He gave evidence of an excellent shot from the per- imeter, and also kicked in other long range shots. Dean Stone and Harry Sil- | len, each tossed in six points in the victory over Valley View. Steven Lee performed strongly on defence and playmaking but also added five points to the total of- fence. : In the first game that the R. H. Cornish B team played, theywon a 23 - 20 squeaker over Meadowcrest. Mea- dowcrest led 13 - 12 at half time. The best played on the floor was Meadowcrest's Perry Mason, who scored nine points and played a strong playmaking and re- bounding match. Richard Allsop scored ten points for R. H. Cornish. Broomball series tied By Rob Evans After two weeks of play- offs, both semi-final series are tied, with the deciding games being played this Sun- day afternoon. In the first game, Utica tied their series by defeating Beacock's Hardware, 3 to 1. Rick Collins scored first for Utica, assisted by Keith Elli- cott late in the first period. Four minutes later, Collins put Utica ahead by two goals. with Tim Mitchell and Tim Ashbridge picking up the assists. Beacock's tal- lied late in the second on a scramble in front of the Utica net. Don Toutant scored assisted by Wayne McGuigon and Steve Hawes. Bernie McEnaney closed out the scoring for Utica from Tim Mitchell and Rick Col- Midget basketball prospects by Danny Millar The Midget basketball team from Port Perry over- all had an improved season over the previaus year. This year they began with the longest undefeated streak of the three teams, which last- ed five games. This came to an abrupt halt with the transfer loss of one player, as the team struggled to a less than .500 season the rest of the way. Scott Patton was the team's top playmaker and a . lins. In this series, goaltend- ing for both teams has been outstanding and could very well be the deciding factor of the final outcome. In the second game, Laroc- que Electric rebounded from last week, and dumped C & B Livestock, 2 to 0. Bill Bridge and Rob Stevens set up Richard Honey on a good passing play who made no mistake and fired it past Fraser in the C&B net. The game remained scoreless as both goalies made numerous good saves. In the final minute C&B pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, but Bill Bridge ended it all when he scored from his own end assisted by Charlie Dur- ward. Kevin Beer recorded the shutout for Larocque Electric. key scorer before he left mid-way through the season as his family returned to his native United States. Patton was a first year high school player as were almost all of the Midget Rebels this year. At the beginning of the year, the Midget lineup looked imposing. Patton teamed up front with Mark Phillips, another pretty fair scorer and were backed by guard Donny Young. On the bench they had big Stan Glass, a decent shooter. 7 The boys team from R. H. Cornish Public School in Port Perry captured the 8th annual invitational basketball tournament sponsored by the school and held on Saturday. Cornish beat a team from Joseph Gould school 39-26 in the final. Front row from left Runners up in the tournament was this team from Joseph Gould School in Uxbridge. Front left, Kirk Elliot, David Anderson, Gordon Weatherup, Carl Orr After Patton left, the passing ability enabled the scoring onus fell on Young and he came up with some big efforts, including a 40 point game against East- dale. Throughout the season Young established himself as one of the finest back court men in the midget circuit. He gave evidence of ballhandling ability, and deadly shooting prowess. His most productive scoring opportunities came from the top of the key or on quick drives down thé middle. His team to insert a dangerous fast break into the game plan. This was used time and time again, usually to Jamie Lane or Phillips at the other end of the court. Phillips was another player who improved stead- ily in the abscence of Patton. Phillips' best game was an inside shooting game where he could score consistently if Young could get the ball to him. The most exciting game : i are: Harry Sillen, Mike Connally, Rob Burnett [captain] and Vaughn McKee. At back from left are, Steve Lee, Mark Penny, coach Rob Smart, Grant Perry and Dean Stone. and J.P. Herold. At back are coach Wayne Tesky, Scott Harper, Harold Kim, Carl Risebrough, Andrew Mclivride and manager Sam Graham. look bright the Rebels played in the 1979-80 season was a 45-44 win over the" Lakers of GL Roberts on Feb. 11. That contest went back and forth throughout the 32 minutes before Glass won the game with a ten foot jumper less than a second before the final buzzer sounded. In that confrontation Young notched 27 points while Phillips had six and Glass five. The Rebels' season came to a close when they were beaten by the powerful Pickering Trojans in the LOSSA quarter-final game three weeks ago. Next year's Midget team may have a future that outshines the ones predicted for the last two versions of the midgets. Apparently the public school team from RH Cornish is a top rated one and a couple of its best players will be graduating. Vaughn McKee, Rob Burnett and Steve Lee could be on the first high school team next year. " [2
