They lost the series in four games, bowing out on Saturday, March 8 by a 4-3 margin. : Bob Horton played one of his best games of the play- offs when he rifled in three goals in the final game. He also contributed three penal- ties in a game that saw the Pacers take 15 minors while the hosts were slapped with 13. Wayne Robinson had four of those while Scott Sandison took a triple minor, four minutes for cross- checking and two for un- sportsmanlike conduct. Sandison's penalty was the most crucial as Schomberg managed two power play goals in his absence. Randy Jennings got one of them on an unassisted effort and Dan Wiederhold got the other on a low, hard drive from the I= SKi CLUB Located 1 Mile East of Kirby, off Hwy. 115 & 35. Port Perry ran into a rash of penalties in the later stages of the second period, starting with Sandison's at 6:12. At one point there were four men in the box as Horton was nailed for a minor and Brian Mikkelson achieved a ten minute mis- conduct for voicing his opinion of the call. The Pacers never led in the final game of their season. Schomberg opened the scoring 4:55 into the fray when Jennings passed out from the right corner to Paul Martysuck in front of the net to tip the shot past Clay Lovering. Horton got the goal back on a brilliant unassisted play when he picked up a loose puck in his own zone and carried it into the Schom- berg end before letting go a slap shot just after he step- ped over the blue line. Goal- tender Alan Ross did not even react to the shot that went under his pad at 6:04. Mike Pinder slammed in a shot from the point while Horton was off. Although the first Schomberg goal was official- ly not on the power play, Martysuk got it just as Horton had stepped onto the ice and was not yet back in the play. While Schomberg capita- lized on the advantages in the second frame, the Pacers controlled most of the final 15 minutes of what turned out to be their season. At the beginning of the third period Lovering was replaced by Robert Franssen, who played well considering he was seeing his first action in over a month because of a broken foot. He had been back up for several games. Port began the third period with a two man advantage and although they pressed, they could not score. ~Horton finally found the mark 2:21 into the period when he shot in a rebound after Robinson had been stopped. Horton set up an interes- ting finish when he knocked in a loose puck on a scramble in front of the Schomberg goal with 52 seconds remain- ing. Jim Thomas was in the Schomberg penalty box at the time for charging. Franssen was removed 18 seconds from the end after Schomberg had iced the puck for the second time in the final minute to alleviate the intense Pacer pressure. Brad Warden nearly scored into the empty net with six seconds left when Robinson failed to keep the puck in the offensive zone at the blue line. Warden outraced Robinson for the puck and fired a shot off the post. The Pacers had been one of the most entertaining teams in Port Perry this season. They boasted of excellent goaltender Lover- ing and two offensive wizards, Todd Wilbur and Doug Potts. In the final match, both Wilbur and Potts were kept off the score sheet, except for a couple of penalties. They teamed on a line all season long with Mikkelson, who played well throughout, but in the last match Wilbur was relegated to defence to shore up a serious weakness there because of some recent cuts.
