'"The Lung Asso- ciation is really concerned at the findings of the recent U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Women and Smoking' says Lung Asso- ciation Executive Director Angela Tibbles. '"This public awareness week is in direct response to those findings." The Report, (published earlier this year), claims that "the first signs of an epidemic of smoking-related diseases among women are now appearing' and that cigarettes now pose the major threat to a woman"s personal health and her ability to bear healthy child- ren. "We're particularly keen to reach mothers and pros- pective mothers in our community,'"' says Mrs. Tibbles, "so that the next generation of Canadians are not disadvantaged before birth or from early infancy by constant exposure to cigarette smoke." Throughout the Week Lung Association staff and volunteers will be involved in a variety of projects, ran- ging from speaking engage- ments and Mall Exhibits to a Smoking Withdrawal Clinic in Whitby. A Carbon Monoxide Ecolyzer (which tests the level of Carbon Monoxide in the blood) will be used during the exhibits in Bowmanville, Oshawa and Pickering Malls. With one exception, all local hospitals will observe the Week, which also has the backing of the District Health Council, Durham Regional Health Unit and the Board of Health. A number of women's Service Clubs and Organizations across the Region will participate through their sponsorship of paid advertising. 'Existing opera- tions are expanding, and income from syrup is becom- ing a larger part of many farm incomes." The technology of the industry is also changing. Now, about 50 percent of the province's maple syrup producers use plastic tubing and vacuum pumps to collect sap, instead of the traditional spile and bucket method. The Ontario Minis- try of Agriculture and Food is funding research to further improve the tech- nology of the industry. 2 pc. Chicken Dinner, Chips 3 pc. Some research projects are taking a second look at wood burners and improved wood- handling systems in an attempt to reduce energy costs. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources is also involved in maple syrup research, but it is working from the roots up. Ninety percent of the syrup is sold in liquid form, while the remainder is sold as taffy, maple butter and maple sugar. The major syrup-produ- cing areas are Lanark and Simcoe Counties and Water- loo Region. However, syrup is produced in many parts of Ontario from Windsor to Ottawa, and as far north as Sault Ste. Marie. Maple syrup festivals and demonstrations are held annually in many locations throughout the syrup- producing areas. These events are scheduled from mid-March to early April. $42.00 eC She) 4 ER SOR "5 82 SD
