» . @® by Danny Millar Oshawa TV Towers, who ¢ finished in first place in the Lake Scugog hockey league during the regular season, skated to an easy 114 win over Port Perry in a semi- serious contest Sunday, March 23. The Port team that played this exhibition game has several new faces in addition to the players who ended up in fourth spot in the four team circuit. Several ex-junior C players who played under coach Doug Scott either this year or last have decided to - come out of retirement to play in a Newcastle tourna- ment in April. The Oshawa game was supposed to be a test for them. Players on both teams took the game lightly. Several easy goals were scored on Port Perry goalkeepers Phil Stasinski and later Clay Lovering because of their teammates loafing down the ice after being beaten at the opposite end of the rink. -Phil Cochrane, Bill Bridge, and Bill Owen will be the main- stays of the tournament - squad. All three were regu- lars with the Port Perry MoJacks this year, with Cochrane and Bridge sharing Most Valuable Player honours. Players who were with coach Scott the year before include Randy Crawford and Mark Jobb, who led the senior team in scoring this season, a year in which they went winless through the entire schedule. Also on hand for the upcoming tourney will be Colin Wackett, who spent some time with the MoJacks last year, and Doug Christie, a junior of years ago. Oshawa was in complete command during the exhibition. They opened up a 'Oshawa whips Port Perry Seniors] 1-4 3-1 lead after the first 20 minute straight time period. Their second goal came when they were down a man with Bill Demoe sitting out a tripping infraction. With 1:16 left Wayne Blanchard, the LSHL's leading scorer, put a move on defenceman Tom Taylor and then passed off to Chris Griffen who fired the puck in behind Stasinski. - Seven minutes into the second period, Oshawa went ahead 4-1 on the first of several two on one breaks as the Port defence seemed to go on strike, perhaps disput- ing the weekend work hours. Glen Rowe finished off the play that started with a pass over.from Gary Sherben. Christie got a nice goal for Port Perry with 11:33 to go in the second period when he deked goalie Randy Prowler on a break away after he picked up a superb head man pass at center from Cochrane. Novice team nipped in tournament final x J by Sandy Sorley Uxbridge Tournament The Pierce Auctioneers attended the Uxbridge tourn- -ament last Saturday and were narrowly squeezed out --@__by the hosting town. The day - was to start out with our first ~game at 10:00 against Cobourg but as a result of the '"'monsoon" rains they received, found it impossible to travel down. = Therefore, that automatically put us on the championship side and we then waited till 1:00 to see who we would play. That was Bowmanville. In a previous bout, we lost against this team, but not this time. The Pierce Auc- tioneers outplayed the Toros and were dominant on the defensive. They appeared confident and helped Chris McConnell earn his shut out who was also strong in net. This gave clear traffic offensively and the pressure was on. Mike Sorley scored 2 nice goals that were the direct results of his teammates Shawn Phillips and Daryl Leather- dale. The game ended at 2-0. That left us to grill Uxbridge in the final game of the day. We did, but we lost by a near 3-2. Time was not on our side in this game because if it was, Port could have better- ed the score. Port gave it all they had and we even out shot them but the puck would not go past the goalie pads. The Auctioneers were down 2-0 into the 3rd period when Jarrett Harmen sparked the team with his unassisted goal. Uxbridge went ahead 3-1. Clair Cornish sailed down the ice to score unassisted and made it 3-2. But unfortunately one second was left in the game. The strong Uxbridge team were a very proud group of boys and were happy to crown themselves at their tournament. We, too, hope very much we can reply in . the same manner at our own tournament April 4. Thank you to Coach Don Steele and Manager Gary McConnell for many hours of their spare time to help their team to play their best. And congrat- ulations to the Pierce Auct- ioneers. They are: Chris McConnell, Brent McMillan, Derek Lewis, Derek Fitz- gerald, Neil Mark, Mike Sorley, Sean Bradbury, Shane Wark, Matthew Dur- ward, Clair Cornish, Paul Wylie, Daryl Leatherdale, Jeff Mills, Jarrett Harmen, Mike Feasby, Shawn Phillips, Mike Toye. ulhq elle brother EVERYONE WELCOME CELEBRITY DAY Saturday, March 29th, 1980 THE BIG BROTHER ASSOCIATION OF SCUGOG DISTRICT 3:30 to 5:30 P.M. BOWL for BIG BROTHERS ~ CENTENNIAL LANES - PORT PERRY Sponsor Sheets available at the Bowling Alley. For information call: 985-3733 or 852-7262 - The Christie effort was matched by one from Sherben when he took a cross rink pass off the stick of Dave McKee and went in to flip a shot in just under the cross bar. Demoe got the seventh Oshawa goal with 3:41 to go in the middle session when he netted a rebound from the middle of the face off circle on the right side. It marked the second straigh{, goal that Oshawa got via second shot, a clear indication of the Port blueliner's inability to clear the puck. Lovering started the final period between the pipes and played decently despite allowing four goals. When Port took to the ice to begin the period there were two new players on the bench. Griffen got the first Oshawa goal at the 3:17 mark on a deke after he rushed the puck down the ice and about three minutes later Sherben got a goal on a rebound. Not all the players took the game loosely. There was a minor shoving incident that ended when an Oshawan dropped his gloves and motioned for Dave Jackson to take him on. Jackson ended up with a double minor. PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, March 26, 1980 -- 13 MoJack MVP Award The Port Perry MoJack team Most Valuable Player award for the 79-80 season was shared by Phil Cochrane [left] and Bill Bridge. Both polled the same number of votes from players on the team. This was the last year of Junior C hockey for both Cochrane and Bridge as both are now over age. Appreciation Plaque In appreciation for his sponsorship of the MoJacks, Mr. Ken Jackson [right] was presented with a special plaque from players and directors.
