Lakefield got the tying goal with two seconds left in regulation time after Port Perry had led since the 7:38 mark of the second period. Two seconds and Port Perry would have been in the final four long periods of hockey earlier! Ridpath got the tying goal on a blast from the point when Gilders won a draw from Johnstone, Port's best face-off man. The overtime was just as exciting as the regulation time had been. Gilders nearly scored into an open corner but missed by inches and then Young went down the ice and rifled a shot off the post. Buf perhaps the play of the overtime was the defensive gem that Steve Lee came up with. Lakefield broke into the clear with a two man break but Lee made a diving stop on Davey's attempted pass on the first try. Davey got the puck again and tried a second pass but Lee, still on the ice, managed to knock the puck away with his stick. In the regulation time, Gilders, who was in on all three goals, pocketed his own rebound 52 seconds after the opening whistle when he beat Young on a one on one. The Gilders-Young match up was the most obvious one of the series, pitting two excel- lent team players against each other. ] Lane evened the score early in the second period when he eluded Gilders on a one on one, then lofted a wrist shot that trickled Atom A's victory Continued concern of the team. But then, that can be expected from young athletes in the 9-10.age bracket. Burnett got a nice goal with 3:06 left to conclude the Port Perry offence. He went down a wing but was knock- ed down while carrying the puck. Still he managed to slide a shot under Chambers, while falling. Twitchett got the third of his three goal hattrick when he fired up a loose puck at center and sped past Burnett and fired it into the top of the net on Whalen's glove side with 1:35 left. 000000000000000000000000000 PORT PERRY & DISTRICT MINOR SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION DANCE Saturday, March 29th, 1980 8:30 P.M. to 1:00 A.M. Johnstone played the messanger role when he told Young to take the point and , if Johnstone won the draw and got the puck back to him, to cut it loose. It worked to perfection as Young put his team ahead with 6:22 remaining. It looked as though Port had the series won when Vaz put a shot into the net early in the third period after he carried the puck out from behind the net and tried to stuff it in the short side. It came on the first shot on net in the period. With Jones in the box for elbowing, Gilders scored on a drive from just inside the center red line. It was a low, hard shot right along the ice. And then came Ridpath's goal. Port Perry grabbed a 4-3 decision in the first of three games played last week when they won at home on Wednesday, March 19. Lane opened the scoring almost half way through the first period on a second effort after Young's blast missed the net. Vaz put them ahead 2-0 at 1:12 of the second period when he knocked in a McKee shot from the blue line on a power play, had been a weak link for Port throughout the series. Harman made the stop of the night two minutes later when he slid across the goal mouth to grab a Gilders flip shot. Harman made another save on Gilders, this time on a breakaway after McKee lost the puck at center ice. Gilders finally scored just seconds after being stone walled when he went to the blue line to block a clearing try and carried the puck in to beat Harman on the deke. Gilders evened the score before the end of the period when he put a shot past Harman after the quick goalie left one post uncovere- ed Port Perry got the two goals which turned out to be the go ahead one two minutes apart. Johnstone got the first one when he jammed in a rebound after Young's backhand was turned away. Young got the winning goal with 9:44 to go when he deflected a McKee shot from the point. Harman thwarted Gilders once more with a brilliant skate save from the slot after Gilders stole the puck from Young. Gilders got his third goal of the game when he finally managed to plug in a shot after Ridpath and Dave Faul had attempts spoiled. Port Perry's biggest problem in the six games may have been tough, aggressibe forechecking of Lakefield. The break out system that Port uses fell apart on several occasions because the defenceman cannot elude the bigger opposing forwards along the boards. Time after time Port. tried to clear the puck out along the boards but failed. Late in this game Lakefield threatened on several times but Harman © blanked them. After. a physically and emotionally draining series, especially for Young, who averaged three quarters of the playing time, and McKee who was on the ice more than half the time, Port Perry goes against Dresden start- ing on the coming weekend for the All-Ontario finals. An occasional vacuuming of the coils behind or undemeath the refrigerator can help it last longer and it won't use more electricity than it has to. Take the $1 bill test. Shut the door of your fridge on a dollar bill. If the bill pulls out easily cold air can flow out too, adding to your energy costs. The fridge may need a new gasket or the solution may be as simple as making sure the appliance is level. Look who's stealing your electricity. If there's more than .6 cm. (% inch) of frost in your freezer, you re putting energy on ice. Regular defrosting is easy to do and it's easier on the fridge. Use Energy Wisely Tune-up, clean up. It's simple.
