A RR A OE AR ) L by Danny Millar The four year old Cart- wright Softball Association is growing in leaps and bounds. The coming season will see the addition of two new teams, bringing the total to 13 in the junior and senior leagues. The CSA is principally a two man, one woman operation. The Cartwright system is divided into three parts. The "T Ball youngsters is run by Beth Schryburt, while Kenny Umphrey is in charge of the junior leagues (aged 7-10) and Orval Quackenbush is president of the senior league from 11-14 year olds. The three leagues patron- ize four different diamonds. The T Ball which is in its first year, plays at the Cartwright Public School on Thursday nights. There will be four teams with 14 players on eachside. "It all seems to running smoothly," accord- ing to Schryburt. The cost of T Ball is kept to a minimum says Schryburt because there is very little equipment required and they already have most of what they need. They will be holding a Bake Sale on June 14 in Blackstock in order to raise extra funds. None of the teams in Cartwright are travelling teams, "and Cartwright Softball Assoc. .will have 13 teams in league we'ed like to keep it that way," says Umphrey. Each player in the 'CSA gets a T shirt, cap and crest to keep following the com- pletion of the season. In the case of the T Ball the player's name will appear on the front because as Schry- burt, a former coach in Port Perry, says '""The coach has to be able to yell out a player's name." These benefits are included in the $5-7 registration fee. "What we stress is fun for the kids,"' enthused Umphrey. He also said he is "very pleased" with the steady growth of the Association. He concurred with Schryburt in saying that he did not know of any major problems within the CSA. At the end of the year Cartwright holds a banquet at the Blackstock Recreation Center usually near the end of August. At that time there is a trophy handed out to the championship team in each league. Also, every player is given a crest. Each year, the CSA schedules what it calls a "Fun Night" in which the main event is a game pitting the youngsters fathers against each other. Everyone bats in the batting order and play in the field is rotated. Not everyone agrees with this sensible system however. Apparently several parents have brought their children over to Port Perry because of the more competitive nature of the game over here. Those previously mentioned regulations do not exist in Port Perry. In Cartwright all the junior players play in the same league and all the seniors compete against each other in a separate confrontation. The coaches of the teams use an interesting draft method of selecting players. They go by the player's age, starting with all the seven year olds and working their way up. "The teams are even. They're not stacked", says Umphrey. A fourth member to the CSA braintrust would be helpful according to Umphrey. The new person could start a league of older teenagers from 15-17 years old. Ringette Awards Night The Port Perry Ringette Association held their annual banquet and awards night last Thursday at the Scout Hall and all of the girls participating during the past season were awarded their crests. Mrs. Young and her family will be leaving Port Perry this year and it was through her motivation that the Port Perry Ringette Association was formed.
