They came up one win short of $200 as they were beaten in the final by Pontypool Generals. Earlier Port Perry had squeaked by Fraserville Phillies 2-1 in extra innings and scored a dramatic 6-5 decision over Bailieboro. On Sunday they upset favoured Lindsay Merchants 4-2 for the right to meet the Generals. Righthander Kevin Walker and another righty, Chris Cook of the Phillies locked horns in a pitcher's duel in the first Port Perry match. They eached allowed a run in the third inning but remain- ed scoreless through the other six, forcing the over- time. Newly acquired Grant Jackson'drove in the winning run in the top of tHe ninth. Ken Davidson led off the ninth with a bunt single. He was sacrificed into scoring position by the teams best 'bunter,- Bill St. John, and driven in on Jackson's RBI single to centerfield. Jackson is an excellent hitting second baseman who will be playing part time with Port Perry. He also made the best fielding play the tournament when he dived to the ground to catch a sinking liner that was headed through the hole int the first inning, robbing Mark Van Dam of a base hit. Port Perry got its run off Cook in the second after Charlie Durward worked Cook for a walk and then all the way around to third base on illegal pitches. He came home on Rob Evan's run scoring double. A two out single by Van Dam scored Rick Carl in the bottom of the third with Fraserville's lone tally. Rarely will a ball fan ever find a more dramatic game than the one in which Port Perry nipped Bailieboro. The game was played under darkening clouds and threatening skies all the way through. Late in the game the clouds burst open, nearly forcing the umpiring crew to halt proceedings' Bill Owen started on the mound for Port Perry but was tagged for four runs and chased in the second inning. In the bottom of the second, 'Owen, one of the team's key hitters, took a big cut at a pitch and his knee buckled. He went down like a shot and stayed at the plate for several minutes before being carted off. Later in the evening he was taken to the hospital with suspected cartiledge problems. This will be confirmed some time during the week. Bailieboro added a run in the third and went into the bottom of the seventh with a 5-0 lead. Charlie Durward started the final at bat for Port Perry by getting hit by a pitch. Mike Healey came up and hammered a long run home to centerfield, making the score 5-2. And then the rains came. The umpires.. called the game immediately but Port Perry protested so they decided to take a brief rain "delay, which lasted about 10 - minutes. Before they left Ron Redman had been hit by a pitch. Robert Evans and Doug Scott hit Texas League singles into the strong wind to load the bases. And then St. John came up. He rifled a triple, scoring three runs to tie the score. Two runners crossed the plate easily. before Scott came sliding in safely on a very, very close play. With the winning run at third base Jackson singled up the middle to bring St. John home. Jackson got his third RVBI in the first inning when he singled in Evans, who had got on with a base hit tb give Port Perry a lead. Scott got on in the third inning with an infield single and then Redman tagged Pitcher Craig Stamp for a long home run over the left field fence. Redman has Port been one of the best hitters in the line up so far this year, leading the team in round trippers with four. Port Perry got an insur- ance run in the sixth when Walker doubled to straight- away center and scored on Mark Lee's two bagger off the left field fence. Port could managed only three hits off lefty Brent Fallis in the final game. The winning hurler also cranked out a homer, the third off Walker for the day, in the Juveniles finally hit for a victory (From page 12) Fedyk was the starting figure-in the second inning. He lined a base hit to center- field and then stole second, to get into scoring position. He advanced one base on a passed ball charged to Steeves and then scored when Dickson hit a double to the same spot where he tripled in the first. Steeves got the first Cabinet run in the top of the third. He singled up the middle and went to second when the ball got caught up in the screen behind the plate. He advanced to third on a fielder's choice and scored sliding into the plate. Doupe drove in Braun, who had tripled to left center field in the third to give Port a commanding 7-1 advantage. Port Perry increased that by arunin the next inning when Ireland scored on Durward's two out double. The game was not without its defensive highlights. In the Cabinet fourth Thompson 'fielded a bunt and threw off balance to Ireland at first. Ireland did the splits to take the low throw gand still kept his foot on the bag. It was one of four put outs that Thompson assisted on. Canning's inside the fences number was the highlight of the three run sixth for Port. Gibson and Durward were already in scoring position when Canning entered the match. He drove the offer- ing to left field and came in to score quite easily. Oshawa got the last two runs of the game, the first of the pair being scored by Rob Garrow, known to locals as the Mojack's hockey player. Earlier in the week Port Perry was not as impressive as they were beaten 5-2 by Albuk in Oshawa. Their next home game is Thursday, June 5 at 8:30 p.m. against Ontario Motor Supply.
