The winning tally came in the bottom of the ninth after Ron Redman scored the ninth run to tie the game. Redman tucked a shot inside the left field line and then went to third when catcher Harvey Hamilton bobbled a pitch. After the hit Donnie Timms relieved lan Page. Scott teed off on an initial Timms delivery, sending it to the fence in right center field to score Redman. The win gives Port Perry an 8-4 record in Lake Scugog League games. They cur- rently occupy first place in the five team circuit. The game marked the return of outfielder-pitcher Bill Owen. Owen had injured a knee cartilage in a tour- nament game against Bailie- boro over a month ago. Coach Scott was happy to see the return of the strong hitter. "When we get Kevin (Walker, out with arm prob- lems) back and Billy back, we'll be a lot stronger," said Scott after the game. Owen made his appear- ance in the bottom of the eighth as a designated pinch hitter for Glenn Howsam. Name Tom Olsen coach of the year Tom Olsen, formerly of Prince Albert and a product of the Port Perry Minor Hockey system is starting to make a name for himself as a high school coach south of the border. Four years ago, Tom went to Bowling Green University in Ohio on a full hockey scholarship, and played two full seasons. When a nagging knee injury and operation put a halt to his playing, he switch- ed to coaching, and last season skippered the Bow- ling Green High School varsity-squad to the league, district and finally the state championships in Cleveland, Ohio. For his efforts, he was named coach of the year, and had the honour of coach- ing the league all-star team. Tom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Olsen of Prince Albert. He had a sparkling career in the Port Perry Minor Hockey ranks and went on to play Junior B in Oshawa. He was drafted by the Oshawa Generals of the Major Junior A league, but chose instead to accept the full scholarship at Bowling Green University. He graduated this spring with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Adminis- tration. He struck out on a closely called strike. It looked as though Port had thrown the game away after Yelverton batted in the eighth and scored four times off lefthander Ken Irvine. Scott and Howsam commit- ted errors that allowed Page and Timms to get on base. They were sacrificed along and Page scored when Coch- rane dropped a routine pop up over second base. Dale Stinson drove in Timms and Hamilton with a right field single then went to second on Ivan Disney's safety. Stin- son scored when Cochrane fielded a hit by George Hamilton and threw low and wide past second baseman Scott. The game see-sawed all the way. Port opened with a two run lead in the first that stood until the fifth, when Yelverton notched a pair. Port came back with three runs in the sixth and another in the seventh. Meanwhile Yelverton runners touched home seven times in the last three innings before Port won it with the final inning dramatics. Neither pitcher, Irvine or Page, were impressive. It was a hitters game right from the time Ken Jeffrey lined a triple into left field - and that came on the first pitch of the game. At times both teams were erratic on defence. Yelverton out hit Port 13-9. Port enjoyed its best inn- ing in the sixth when they knocked Page for three runs. Cochrane legged out an infield hit, stole second, went to third on Redman's retire- ment, and scored on an Irvine grounder. Scott singled and then he and Irvine came home when Page pounded a triple to centerfield. Page hit seventh in the order and ended up with three runs batted in. Coach Scott doesn't think the Port Perry team is play- ing as well as it should be. He said that they will do a lot of practicing between now and mid-August when they enter OASA Intermediate playoffs. The coach also announced the signing of Brent Fallis, a burly, left- handed, first baseman- pitcher who swings a big bat, for post-season play. Fallis is currently with league opponents Pontypool Generals.
