Durham council last week approved a recommendation from the Region's Social Services Committee to seek provincial approval for the idea and make application for the necessary subsidies. If approved, the Region would have up to 25 beds at the Ballycliffe Lodge Nursing Home in Ajax for ambulatory patients, or those- who do not require intensive nursing care. If the province gives its approval to the proposal, the program could be in opera- tion by the beginning of next year. A new addition now under construction at Bally- cliffe is expected to be complete by that time. The Social Services Committee estimates that there are currently 400 people in Durham on the waiting list to get into a home for the aged, and about Chamber of Commerce home' for aged half of these would be con- sidered ambulatory patients. Committee chairman, John DeHart told council last week that the Ballycliffe Lodge is one of the best facilities in the area, and if accepted the program would be under the general super- vision of the administrator of Fairview Lodge, which is operated in Whitby by Durham Region. Those patients accepted into the home would be expected to pay the full rate (currently $19 per day) if they can afford it. Because of provincial subsidies, the Social Services department estimates that the 25 bed program would cost Durham Region a maximum of $21,000, if all the beds were occupied by patients who could not afford to pay any of the costs. However, a more reason- able estimate of yearly cost would be about $16,000 to the Region, according to the report from the Social Servjces department: FARMER/FLEA MARKET Western Weekend Got Something to Sell?
