However, the increase will not take effect until next January and it must first be ratified by the incoming council later this year. The issue of voting them- selves a pay increase is Caesarea Regatta to be held this weekend The first day, Saturday, August 2, of the 1980 Lake Scugog Regatta has been dedicated to the memory of the late Bill Ringham, who was an organizer of the event for 30 years. Mr. Ringham. passed away this summer. This year's Regatta is the 48th annual. It runs for three days from August 2-4 at Caesarea. The event kicks off with the Gala Fun Parade Saturday morning, followed by the Miss Regatta Beauty Contest. Mr. Callery said on Monday that after the OMB decision was handed down he met with Scugog area coun- cillor Jerry Jackman in an effort to come up with some kind of compromise to agree- ment regarding the truck entranceway to avoid having to file formal objections which could be lengthy affairs. Mr. Callery said that a ; ? | failed to reach any kind of agreement about changing the plans so that the en- tranceway would come off John Street. In an effort to show that a truck entranceway off Mary Street would create prob- lems, Mr. Callery said he is making arrangements to have a full size tractor- trailer demonstrate turning and backing on Mary Street and also on John Street. He said he hopes the demonstration can take place in the near future to show people why the resi- dents of Mary Street are opposed to a truck entrance- way -on their street. hall ~~ Fi Tn id - => = rm [aA wal on all BONE CHINA EARTHENWARE GIFTS ws (RERRARERE lai | WATCH FOR OUR WEEKLY ¥2 PRICE SPECIALS! o 0 Pattersons of Port 197 Queen St. - 985-8332 We are now using our 'Bank Vault" for 'Ends of Lines' and 'Odds"n Ends' so you can Cash In on Super Savings. always a contentious one for members of any council, and itis the policy of the Durham council to have its manage- ment committee come up with a recommendation on this touchy subject. Although the vote last week in favour of the policy recommendation carried by the wide margin of 17-11 (with two members absent) Oshawa councillor Ed Kolod- zie was loud and vocal in his opposition to the proposed hike. "It is ludicrous for any pay hike for council at this time because of the depressing economic situation in Durham Region," he told his fellow councillors. "How can a member from Whitby support this increase with Firestone going out of business leaving 600 people without jobs?' he asked. Kolodzie also made refer- ence to the closing of Hou- daille in Oshawa and the Chrysler difficulties in Ajax. A reference by Kolodzie to the short meeting of council and committees raise the ire of several of his fellow councillors, and Oshawa rep Bruce McArthur reminded council that earlier this year Kolodzie had missed some meetings when he was teach- ing a course at a community college in Toronto. Oshawa Mayor Jim Potti- cary did not support the motion, but for different reasons than Kolodzie. The Mayor said the recommen- dation was meaningless. "If the new council wants a raise in pay, let them decide how much and vote for it themselves," he stated. However, the recommen- dation got support from both Uxbridge Mayor Gary Herrema and Oshawa rep Allan Dewar who called it 'reasonable and respon- sible." "The proposed increase is less than the Consumer Price Index, and less than settlements in industry and labour," said Dewar. Both Scugog Mayor Jerry Taylor "and councillor Reg Rose voted in favour of the recommendation, although neither took part in the debate. Mayor Taylor said after the meeting that he would have preferred to split the recommendation. "I have no trouble with the seven per cent increase for the Regional chairman, but I'm not so sure about the increase for council,' he said. Mayor Taylor will almost certainly be seeking office again this November, and he said that if he is re-elected, he'll think carefully about whether to vote in favour of the ratification of the pay increase when the new coun- cil takes office. Members of Durham council presently make $12,980 with one-third of this tax free. The Regional chairman Walter Beath earns $35,528 plus fringe benefits and use of a car. Last year, the Durham council voted down a pay increase: for themselves. However, Durham council- lors are among the highest paid of all regional munici- palities in Ontario. If the incoming council ratifies the pay increase, Durham councillors as of January 1 next year, will be making $13,889 per annum, and the Regional chairman's job will carry with it a salary of $38,015 plus the fringe benefit package. Graduates Shona Stone recently graduated from Durham College with her diploma in Dental Hygiene. Shona is now employed in Uxbridge. Miss Joan Merchant, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Merchant, graduated from Centennial College of Applied Arts and Technology with her Nursing Diploma on June 20, 1980. Joan has accepted a nursing position at Toronto General Hospital in Obstetrics and Gyneco- logy.
