They have a junior league, which Mr. Umphrey co- ordinates, a senior league, under the auspices of Orval Quackenbush, and a four team T-Ball league, run by Mrs. Schryburt. The T-Ball league plays its Muskie derby on weekend by Danny Millar Western Weekend this year will be a time for salty old fishermen on the mighty Lake Scugog to re-tell some of their best stories of the big ones that got away. This August 9-10 weekend, the Scugog Chamber of Commerce has sanctioned a Muskie Fishing Derby on the waters of the Lake. This is the first time that there has been a fishing derby as part of the Western Weekend festivities. And so far registration hasn't set the docks on fire. "It's been very dead" stated Bill Kendry, who runs the Marina in Port Perry. "Muskie fishing in the last ~~few weeks has been just dynamite here," said - Mr. Kendry. So, with the entry fee of $10 per boat it is a puzzle why the idea hasn't caught on yet. Muskie fish- ing enthusiasts can register at either the Port Perry Marina, or at Goreski's on "Scugog Island. Mr. Kendry rents boats so obviously he stands to make some money on the weekend. In fact, that was probably one of the reasons he approached the Chamber of Commerce. "We're trying to do something for our estab- lishments and the business here," he said. The prize money in the tournament depends on how many enter because the winner, the one with the heaviest muskie in the two day competition, gets 75 per cent of the entry fee. The other 25 per cent goes to the Chamber of Commerce for expenses. Each fish must be weighed in before 5:00 p.m: each afternoon at the Government ~Dock--at -the--Port-- Perry" waterfront. ~~ . The future of the tourna- ment is undecided. If it goes over like a lead balloon then the Chamber of Commerce may not sanction it again. If it is successful then it likely will become a feature in the annual carnival. "We'll just have to see what this year beings," said Mr. Kendry. games in Blackstock and Mrs. Schryburt believes everything is going. well for the'56 young athletes there. "They're learning the basic skills," she says, "They have determined that they're to run to first base, then second then third base," which is quite good for youngsters from 4-7 years old. At the end of the season they plan to have a party night for the children. Locating coaches, often a bane for other organizations, has not been a problem in Cartwright. "We have two or three coaches for every Jersey cows topic team' says the T-Ball co- ordinator. There are four T-Ball teams there. There are approximately 90 players in the senior and junior leagues, accarding to junior circuit president Umphrey. There are six junior and seven senior units. Each of the ball players will get a crest at the banquets, September 3-4. Because Mr. Bacon has a herd of Jersey cattle, we went over the main points of any dairy animal. Mr. Bacon informed us that the Jersey herdsmen .are now also looking toward the taller animal as opposed to the shorter Jersey animal -- "desired a few years ago. After Mr. Bacon presented us with some Jersey pamph- lets, we proceeded to judge two classes of cattle. The first was of aged cows and the second was of two year olds, both of which were in milk. After giving our reas- ons on both classes, , the meeting was ended by decid- ing where our next one would be held."
