Peter Hvidsten Walking through the door of the old mill at Master Feeds is much like walking into the past. Massive wood- en beams, plank floors worn smooth by over one hundred years of use and names of past employees carved into huge wooden supports are just a few of the first things to strike your eye. The interior of the old mill is still much as it was when the building was built in approximately 1868. There is an old cart stuck in one corner which according to an employee has been around Wed., August 6, 1980 as long as the mill and can still carry a load of 800-900 pounds of grain with no trouble. For me, the most exciting aspect of taking the photos which accompany this feat- ure article was the trip to the. top of the building, some 60 feet above the main floor. Entrance to this section of the mill is through a seclud- ed door, which when opened reveals a steep set of stairs ascending practically straight up. Light in this narrow corridor is electric, but of an age gone by, with both switches and fixtures WESTERN JERKED: Hey Kids! Don't Forget The .. - MUTT SHOW -* SATURDAY, AUGUST 9th - 1:00 P.M. Starting up the four flights of stairs, laden with grain dust, you can't help but notice. the walls within the shaft you've entered. It appears at first glance in the dim light that the walls are constructed of lathe, but a closer look reveals that they. are made of either 2 x 10's or 2x 12's laid on their sides. In my estimation there is prob- ably enough lumber in the shaft alone to buyjld a oo houses with todays construc- tion practices." At the top of the shaft, the small peaked area which we see perched on top of the main structure from the out- side, is a series of planked walks over top of the mass- ive bins which can hold up to 50 tons of grain each. The plank walkways and the handrails are laden with the dust of time, made from the grinding and rolling of bush- els upon bushels of grain. At first, each step was placed carefully as I walked along these makeshift paths, but as I grew used to the surround- ings, I became a little more confident. Over top of an exit door, which leads to the roof of the mill and then straight down is a small box containing a rope. When this is opened the rope shoots out through the door and dangles over the side of the building. This is the fire escape! And after looking through those doors, I'll tell you the fire would have to be licking at my rearend before I would vent- ure forth out onto the roof and over the side of the building. It's a long and frightening drop. My thanks to Mike, Jack and Tom of Master Feeds for allowing us to go through the mill and capture some of its charm. This building, to my knowledge is the oldest of the commercial buildings in Port Perry and has been a landmark on the Lake Scu- gog waterfront for longer than anyone can remember. And if any of our readers are like me, you have probably been curious about what goes on inside those historic walls. I hope that the feature article and the accompany- ing photos will help to satisfy your curiosity. SHAMPOO OR CONDITIONER FLE ds Basan © $ 450ml | PLUS ° 200m!
