14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., August 13, 1980 Beat Uxbridge in three Midgets take first OASA series over rivals - by Danny Millar Peter Christie came through with probably the biggest base hit of his career when he singled to drive in Mark Jeffrey in the bottom of the ninth, giving Port Perry Malmont Farms a 4-3 win in the third and deciding game of the first round OASA playoffs against Uxbridge on Sunday, August 10. With the series on the line, Jeffrey lined a shot deep into the left field corner of the Fowler Memorial Park and scampered to third before Brian Taylor could come up with the ball. After hurler Kevin Davis walked Phil Robinson, Uxbridge made a pitching change, bringing in Bill Long. Christie was the first batter to face the new thrower and he punched a delivery into shallow 'left field. The large, vocal crowd watched it fall in front of Taylor for the winning run. The teams, like most Uxbridge and Port Perry clubs, are bitter rivals. The games were fought in knock- down, drag 'em out style. Each match was decided by one run and at no time did either squad take a three run lead. The second game, in Uxbridge, went into extra innings. Robinson was the winning pitcher in the Port victories, both in relief. He got Port out of a jam in the second game and went on to win it, and he came on for Todd Wilbur in the fourth to guide his team home in the last contest. He was lauded after Port wrapped up the title. "I can't believe the way the guy's come through," said the pilot, Kevin Walker. "Our guys played pretty good," stated coach Walker, "I was really surprised with Jeffrey hitting the ball." He later praised Sean Fewer for a triple that he was thrown out at the plate on. Port Perry starts its second series against the winner of Wellington- Sydenham next Saturday, August 16 at home. All of the Lloyd Batchelor and fishing buddy John Hayes heft the two prize winning rounds will be best of three games. In the meantime, they have two league games to conclude their schedule. In Uxbridge, the teams went 11 innings, two more than regulation, before Port escaped with a 7-5 win, even- ing the set at that time. Kevin Harris performed the extra inning heroics for Port in the eleventh. After Brian Dickson got on via infield safety, and went to second on an infield out by Dave Davis, Harris pounded a double that brought him home. Harris, one of the quickest players on the team scored when Scott Sandison laid down a first-rate squeeze bunt. Over the final two matches Port got front line pitching from starters Jeffrey and Wilbur and of course, Robin- son out of the bullpen. Uxbridge threatened to take the series in twg straight games when they loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, with Port leading 5-4. Kevin Risebrough lined a muskie they snagged Sunday morning to win the fishing derby. The fish on left tipped almost 25 pounds, while the one on the right hefted out at 13.5 pounds. Taylor walked following an out and another single load- ed the bases. Risebrough scored the tying run on a grounder by Trevor Till when catcher Dave Davis missed the plate with his foot, trying to get the force out. The receiver came up with a big play later in the frame when Taylor tried to score from third on a passed ball. Davis applied a sweep- ing tag with his bare hand. That crucial inning was definitely the turning point in the series. Had Davis miss- ed Taylor coming home, that would have won the round for Uxbridge. Had Robinson not retired three outs without a run, that too, would have spelled finis to Port's OASA aspirations. The. second game was marked with several excel- lent defensive plays. Taylor "made three good catches from his left field post, two in the tenth segment. Also in the tenth, Harris robbed Long of a hit in right field. Port enjoyed the biggest inning of the three games when they scored four times off Long in the third. Jeffrey got on base and went to second on a wild pitch before John Butler walked. They were sacrificed into scoring position by Christie. Jeffrey scored on third baseman gq Brian Till's throwing miscue. Fewer walked the bases loaded and Dickson cut loose with a three RBI triple into the left centerfield gap. 'Uxbridge managed single ¥ runs in the third, sixth, and ninth and a pair in the first. Port got its other run in the first when Wilbur singled up the middle to drive in Butler. With the series triumph, the midgets become the first Port Perry team to advance into the second round of Ontario Amatuer Softball Association playdowris. The other teams got started this week.
