The Uxbridge scoring came in clusters of two, as: they tallied pairs in the third, fifth, sixth and eighth frames. They did the damage off the lacklustre pitching of starter Phil Robinson, and later, hard throwing righthander Mark Jeffrey. The game see-sawed back and forth. The lead changed hands three times in the first five innings and never at any time was it higher than two points. After Uxbridge got its run in the eighth, Port couldn't come back. Home diamond did not help Port. By losing the first game, they put themselves behind the eight ball, having to win at least once in Uxbridge. A large crowd accompanied the team from Uxbridge for the initial match. They were like Uxbridge-Port crowds often are - vociferous in support of their team. Port opened the scoring in the home half of the first when John Butler, the out- fielder who played a strong game offensively, led off with a walk. He was sacrificed to second base by Brian Dick- son and scored on an extra base hit by Sean Fewer. The Port shortstop singled, went to second when Bill Long fired a wild pitch, and scored when Dave Davis lined a "\ single. Uxbridge batsmen reach- ed Robinson again in the fifth, and Port was fortunate to come out of the inning with only two runs scored against them, which came in when Kevin Davis hit a line drive double over Dickson's head. That blow came with the bases loaded following two singles and an error by Jeffrey, then playing third base. Uxbridge looked disor- ganized in the fifth session and Port Perry took advan- tage of it. Butler got on with a base hit that fell in just over second base. That shot drew a crowd but nobody could come up with the ball. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and Fewer walked to put runners on the cor- ners. Todd Wilbur cranked out a hit that the outfielder bobbled, bringing in Butler STEER THIS WAY... By Colin Ball Cade _-- 5 Road bumps and potholes can throw your car out of alignment and create abnor- mal performance. Result: shimmy, vibration, tire squeal, and difficult steer- ing. Watch it, even if wheels were aligned recently. If power steering fails to help on a tight turn, the problem may be belt tension. Have it checked. Good driving practises will keep your automatic trans- mission working better lon- ger. Feed gas gradually for smooth starts - but don't let the car lag at speeds too low for normal transmission shifts. If you use radial tires, use them on ALL wheels. Mixing radials and other tires makes for dangerous handling. Locking gas cap not only saves your gasoline, it limits the distance a thief can drive the car away. Wilbur scored on Davis' retirement. It was Port Perry's turn to look perplexed in the next inning. Uxbridge got a run when rightfielder Scott San- dison dropped a fly ball and Jeffrey threw the ball into the dirt, bouncing past first sacker Keith Trembley. Brian Till added another run on a double to left field. Jeffrey made his appear- ance on the rubber in the eighth inning. He started slowly as Uxbridge nicked him for two runs before he blanked them in the ninth. Canada's Employment Tax Credit Program has been extended.
