He did say, however, that the recommendation which calls on a maximum of five new lots per year for deve- lopment might be unrealistic . Ward 1 councillor Don Crosier says he will be seek- ing the seat of area council- lor in the municipal elections this November. "I figure it is time for me to try to make a move up," the 44-year old dairy farmer told the Star last week.. Unlike the ward council- lors who are elected by the residents of their specific ward, the Scugog area councillor is elected by voters all across the Town- ship. The area councillor's seat is currently held by Jerry Jackman who has indicated he will be seeking municipal election again this Novem- ber. If councillor Jackman decides to try to retain his area council seat and meet Patience finally pays off for first winner of annual Musky Derby Lloyd Batchelor and his two fishing buddies learned over the weekend that to catch muskie in Lake Scugog you must have patience. Batchelor from Kitchener, John Hayes of Brampton and Wally Grygaski from Peters- berg, Ontario, were among thirty teams competing in the first annual Western Weekend Muskie Derby, and the trio fished for more than 10 hours on Saturday without so much as a nibble. Undaunted, they took to the lake again Sunday morn- ing at the crack of dawn, and a couple of hours later had boated two muskies, includ- ing a trophy-size lunker which tipped the scales at just a shade under 25 pounds. That beauty, which meas- ured 50 inches in length and had a girth of 20 inches, easily earned Batchelor first prize money of $217 as winner of the Derby which was co-sponsored by Gor- eski's Marina and Port Fala in a subdivision, and he suggested he could be in favour of allowing up to ten lots per year, if they were under a plan of subdivision. The two have been at logger-heads on a couple of issues in the past two years, most notably the location of the proposed Scugog Public Library. Councillor Crosier has been an opponent of the proposed site on the lake- front, which is now coming before the Ontario Municipal Board for a second hearing in September. He says he is prepared to campaign this November on the library issue, _Counéillor Crosier was first elected to Scugog council in the 1976 municipal voting, and two years later he retained his seat by easily beating three other chal- lengers. Perry Marina. Batchelor, who has been fishing muskie for several years, was a proud man at the official weigh-in cere- monies Sunday afternoon, gladly posing for pictures with his prize catch which brought oohs and aahs from many of the people gathered at the Marina in Port Perry. "I hooked it about 8:30 Sunday morning, while troll- ing a couple of hungred feet off Stephenson's Point," Batchelor told the Star. They had no gaff in the boat and their small net was useless for a lunker of 25 ° pounds. The trio had to stun the fish with a club before gingerly hoisting it into the boat. Batchelor said he was trolling in about 15 feet of water using a "Swim Whiz" plug when the muskie hit. A little more than an hour later, his partner Hayes latched onto a smaller muskie of 13.5 pounds, fish- ing in roughly the same area of the lake and using the same plug. The trio hooked but lost a third muskie Sun- day morning, and they believe it was in the ten pound range. - There were 30 boats enter- ed in the two-day derby, and obviously many of the fisher- men knew the secret to hooking the powerful Lake Scugog muskie, as 15 fish ended up on the scales at the weigh-in. Bill Kendry, one of the tournament organizers, said Patience paid off for muskie fisherman Lloyd Batchelor of Kitchener who latched onto this 25 pound trophy size lunker to win the first annual Western Weekend Muskie Derby. Batchelor and his two fishing partners were skunked on Saturday, but they went back onto the lake Sunday morning and nailed two beauties. [Photo on sports pages.] he was pleasedjwith the way things went, that themuskie derby would becomg a regular feature of Western Weekend in years ahedd. Along with the prize money, Batchelor took home a trophy donated by the two SPONSOrs. As for the fish (24 Ibs., 15 oz.) Batchelor said it's got a date with the .taxidermist, and no doubt will be mounted in a prominent spot in the rec room.
