Butch Potts named MoJack coach The Port Perry MoJacks will open the 1980-81 Junior Cj hockey season with a trio of coaches behind the bench. The team will be skippered by Clare "Butch" Potts who will handle head coaching duties, and he will have two assistant coaches in Mike Adam and Paul Kane. All three are well known in hockey circles in the Port Perry area. Potts has coached various age groups in the Port Perry Minor Hockey system, and last year was at the helm of the Midget "A" squad. Mike Adam was an assist- ant to Potts last season with that club. He has also had several years of recent experienee as a Junior C player in Port Perry with the MoJacks and Flamingos as a rugged hard-hitting defense- man. - The third member of the coaching trio, Paul Kane, played minor hockey in Port Perry several years ago and has playing experience at both the Junior B and Junior C levels. He has coached in the Minor Hockey ranks as well. Although the season open- er for the MoJacks is not until Sunday, October 5 when the Lindsay Muskies visit the Scugog Arena, the MoJacks pre-season preparations will actually get underway on Sunday, September 7 with training camp registrations. The team has sent out about 50 invitations to elig- ible players to attend the training camp, but the camp will be open to any player who wants a shot at making the team. Timms had a perfect game going up until Doug Scott beat out a bunt in the sixth inning. Scott eventual- ly scored on an opposite field single - by Ken Bryant, the only other safety Port could manage off Timms. The nine inning game took less than 1!2 hours to play. Yelverton got four runs in the third inning and that was all the support Timms re- quested. They loaded the bases on three consecutive infield errors by Bryant, Scott and Glen Howsam. Stinson scored when Kevin Walker dished up a wild pitch and Ivan Disney led a two run double into left field. Kevin Nesbitt drove in another run. Timms started quickly and he never let up. He whiffed the side in the first inning and got the first two men in the second on strikes, for five kayes in a row. He also whiffed three men in the third and fifth. Another solid performance by a pitcher marked the first game. Ken Irvine, who has been outstanding in the past month, put in another route going -performance "to gain the win. Though his effort was as dominating as Timms Irvine was seldom in trouble. Irvine is a control hurler who seldom walks anybody. He doesn't get a high strike- out total either. Conversely, Timms was throwing a lot harder than he usually does. Port got off to its' accus- tomed quick start by scoring six runs in the- first three sessions. As it so often happens, the lead off man Bryant got on base, and he went to second. He scored when Robert Evans drilled a two out triple. Evans came a across with the other tally on shortstop George Hamilton's - error. Port Perry men lose in Lob Ball tournament by Danny Millar Port Perry Canadian Tire Men's softball team walked out of a Lob Ball Tourna- ment in Uxbridge on Satur- day, August 23 following some controversial officiat- ing. Port Perry was playing in the tournament with just 11 players, one more than is necessary to field a team. Two players who do not normally play on the team were added to the roster. Port was trailing Oshawa 7-2 in the sixth inning when Dan Millar was called out on a close play at first base. Don Phinney was ejected for debating the call and Doug Scott got the gate later for questioning his team- mates disqualification. Scott who doubles as the team coach, took the team off the field because they only had nine players. The call was one of several that drew the ire of the Port Perry team. The most ob- vious one came in the early innings when outfielder Ken Bryant made an excellent catch near the ground but the home plate arbiter ruled it a trapped ball. In the opening innings Ken Jeffrey was called out at second base after he went into second standing up. The umpire ruled that the sweep- ing tag had been made before Jeffrey walked into the base. Phinney made a pair of standout defensive plays in right field to save the win for Ron Bryant, the winning pitcher. After the Dodgers got the tying run on base, Phinney caught a fly ball and threw the runner out at second. He ended the game with a sliding catch on his knees in foul territory. The Uxbridge tournament is probably the last one Port competes in this year. If they get past Elmvale in the next OASA series, they will be in the Ontario final tourn- ament in Sarnia. ELT ET EE EC EE TTC POWER SKATING year gets underway Septem- ber 8 and the first week will consist of "dry-land' exer- cises designed to help get players in condition before they actually lace up the skates and take to the ice. The first on-ice training will be held September 15 at the Iroquois Park Arena in Whitby, and a second session at that arena will be held on September 17. The team expects to take to the ice at the Scugog Arena on September 19 and will carry out intensive work-outs and scrimmages over the next couple of weeks including a possibility of four pre-season exhibition games. The MoJacks last season finished sixth in the nine- 'eam loop during a year marked mainly by a lack of consistency. The team was beaten out in the final game of the first-round best of five playoff series by Port Hope Panthers. Although the club is losing just a handful of players from last year's roster because of age, the largest gaps to be filled this year will be those left by high-scoring Phil Cochrane and captain Bill Bridge. The league itself this year will also have some changes with the addition of two new clubs and departure of Beaverton Ice Hawks who folded over the summer months. Lakefield and Bewdley will ice teams in the loop this year making for a total of ten teams and each will play a 36-game schedule.
