HAIN SV ; nd Men's softball team drop first play-off game by Danny Millar It has been said by base- ball experts down through the ages that good pitching will beat good hitting, especially in a big game. That was never more appro- priate than Saturday, August 30° when Elmvale nipped Port Perry Canadian Tire 2-1 in the first game of the third OASA round of Intermediate C playoffs. The game was played in Elmvale's little ballpark. There were no fences in the outfield and no ground rules to govern open field hits. The outfield was bordered by long grass that was in play- able territory. Phil Cochrane pounded the first pitch of the ninth inning into the long grass and sped around the basepaths for Port's only run of the game. By the time the speedy Coch- rane had rounded third base the ball had reachad the infield. If the fmvale catcher had not misplayed the relay throw Cochrane would have been out by over five feet. Fortunately, for the visitors at least, the ball bounced off the receiver's shin guard as he tried to make the play. Port Perry bats were silent throughout the match. After Cochrane scored the Elmvale hurler bore down to get the next three hitters. Robert Evans flew out to centerfield. Jay Williams followed and the first two pitches were blown past him. He was brushed off the plate with an obvious purpose pitch and then struck out on the next delivery. Brent Fallis ended the game when he stroked a harmless fly ball to right field. Elmvale got its runs in the first and fifth innings. Ken Irvine served up the second pitch of the game and it was smacked down the left field line, just over the third base "(Turn to page 14) Programme in hand, the gentleman at left watches as the pacers take off for a start of one of the races at the fairgrounds. Betting was brisk, and Brawl spoils game and loss to Midgets --by Danny Millar It seems every time Mill- work brings its softball team up from Oshawa something interesting happens. For instance: early in the season Glenn Dixon, the Millwork third baseman almost started a bench- clearing brawl by hitting catcher Clay Lovering. In the ensuing weeks, Jim Trimm and Juvenile receiv- er Mike Healey almost got into the fisticuffs after anoth- er bumping at home plate. And then, of course, it was Millwork that edged out the Port Perry Seniors in the final game to win the Men's tournament here the first weekend in August. The latest arrival of Mill- work proved no different. Two members of the Port Perry Malmont Farms, Scott Sandison and Coach Kevin Walker, were ejected, and Walker threatened to pull his team off the field. Millwork ended up winning 7-2 on Thursday, 28th. August ~The object of this diss- affection was umpire Bob Curcuit, who made a handful of close calls against Port. He called Walker for two illegal pitches, one of which allowed Dixon, who had a triple down the inside of the rightfield line, to score. Sandison was given the heave-ho in the fourth for no apparent reason other than he was the player seated on the end of the bench. In the previous Millwork inning, Curcuit had ruled that Todd Wilbur, who was playing a new position at first base, took his foot off the bag early in making a play. The umpire had been roasted verbally by the Port Perry athletes and at the end of the inning he warned Coach Walker that if he didn't get any respect from the players he would throw whoever was sitting on the end of the bench out of the game. And that happened to be Sandi- son. After Sandison was waved out, Walker threaten- ed to remove his players and PORT PERRY SNOWMOBILE CLUB presents SNOW New Arena - Port Perry - Ontario SEPTEMBER 12th - 13th - 14th All 1981 Models of Snowmobiles, Accessories and Clothing LARGEST SNOWMOBILE SHOW AT DEALER LEVEL. plus a full line of Cross Country Ski Equipment. He and Circuit went jawbone to jawbone again and the Port skipper was given his walk- ing papers. The game was the final contest of 1980 for the Port Perry Midgets. They ended up league play with four wins and one tie and were just ahead of the Port juveniles in the battle to stay out of the Brady division cellar. Port got both of its runs in the home half of the sixth. John Butler led off with a line drive single into center- field and was followed by another base hit from Bill Wanamaker. Wanamaker forced a rundown between first and second, allowing Butler to score from third. Wanamaker ended up on second base. He later scored on a single by Walker. Millwork got all the runs they needed in the first two innings. Dixon led off with a base on balls in the first. Doug Willoughby laid down a bunt that no one picked up and both moved into scoring run with a shot through third sacker Mark Jeffrey's legs and another runner came in when Jeffrey threw the ball in the dirt on a play at the - plate. Port had picked up its fourth win the night before with a 7-3 triumph over Collegiate Sports. A big four run rally in the fifth was the undoing of Collegiate. Walk- er struck out seven to pick up the win. Keith Woermke was the losing hurler. These two games were rather anti-climatic from Port Perry's viewpoint. They had no chance of mak- ing the playoffs and were eliminated from OASA play a week ago following a tough 3-2 loss to Sydenham. w= ===, TROPHIES; /72 and ENGRAVING 1DO- NO's) | : becom, CRAFT & HOBBY WOR JroR!
