The members enjoyed a barbeque on Jyly 8th, later films were show "The vacant Lot" and "'A Sense of Humus." At the August 5th meet- ing the members held a flower arranging workshop, the Garden Competition results were as follows - Best Flower Garden - Wendy Bateman, Grace Bajema, Claudia McDiarmid, Best Vegetable Garden - Diny Oosterholt, Ria Hoogeveen, Linda Bradburn. On Tuesday evening September 9th, the annual Flower and Vegetable show was held. Judging was done by Marion Carnaghan. During the judging the guest speaker was Mr. John Lloyd from Bowmanville's Chrys- anthemum grower. Mr. Lloyd showed excellent slides taken on a trip to the Yukon. Many in the audi- ence were surprised at the attractive flowers and vege- tables that grow in that area. The temperature is quite similar to Central Ontario during the summer but having so many hours of daylight the growth seldom stops. During the winter months there ig so much snow cover that the per- renials do well. Handicraft by Jo Dowson On Wednesday September 10th, the members of the Louise Patterson Guild met for the first time since the summer recess. The meeting was opened in the usual manner and the president welcomed the members and one guest with a few words about her own summer activities. Correspondence included a letter of resignation from the Card Secretary. The president asked for help in this matter and Mae Donnel- ly offered to fill the post for us. Thank you, Mae. A highlight of the meeting was the presentation by Marjorie Williams, of prizes won for hooking entered in the Port Perry Fair in the following categories: Hook- ed rug from cut woolen material - 1st prize --Mrs. Poldie Mair, R.R. 2, Sea- grave. 2nd prize - Mrs. M. Annis, Brougham. Hooked article, other than rug - 1st prize - Mrs. Beryl Espley, R.R. 1, Port Perry. 2nd prize - Mrs. M. Annis, Brougham. Spanish onions Claudia McDiarmid, Alice Turcotte, Grace Bajema. Tomatoes - Grace Bajema, Edith McLaughlin, Ann Julia Bajema. Table corn - Lucy Gould, Esther Morelli. Largest pumpkin - Eileen McLaughlin, Lucy Gould. Collection of vegetables - Grace Bajema, Alice Turcot- te. Collection of Gourds - Eileen McLaughlin, Claudia McDiarmid. Despite a very unusual growing season the entries were very good. The club enjoyed having a display at the Blackstock Fair again this year. The results of the photo- graphy contest are as follows: Close up of a flower - Alice Turcotte; Spring planting - Pat Kingstone; Flowering Houseplant - Pat Kingstone; Home Sweet Home - Claudia McDiarmid. Beauty Spot in Scugog - Norma Frew. Other outings this summer were a visit to the Gladiolus Show in Bowmanville and a trip to Cullen Village. Members were asked to collect pine cones for the November meeting when we will be making Pine Cone decorations for the Christ- mas season. Guild begins season Our sincere congratulations to all. Our next meeting on Octo- ber 8th is to be a trip by the members to a craft and quilt show in Claremont. Mem- bers are requested to be at St. Johns Church Hall no later than 1:30 p.m. in order that everyone will have a ride. At the conclusion of the business, the meeting was turned over to Margaret Cornish who taught the members how to make most attractive tissue box covers using plastic grid and yarn. During this unit, we are going to learn the basic steps in designing and decor- ating our very own personal space. That's right, - your room is going to reflect your personality. So, get rid of your Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck image and express your character to your room. We will also be adding to our knowledge of skills, by learning the basic techniques and fundament- als of macrame. Our leaders, Mrs. Bolton and Mrs. Kerry have done a UAT Hh es Epsom 4-H Club fantastic job in the prepara- tions for this unit, The members elected for office are as follows: Presi- dent-Peggy Jones, Secretary Donna Kerry, Treasurer- Julie Baster, Press Reporter Sandra Bolton, Committee Chairman-Pat Bolton, Committee-all members. We welcome our new. members, Cathy Baster and Sandra Kerry to our club. Our next meeting will be Sept. 15 at Mrs. Bolton's. I'm sure that this unit of 4H will be a very interesting and exciting one.
