ne a SW A= AR AP CPN Son or = Nas" pos A TIRE A TD Sra ON wa 6 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., September 17, 1980 Scugog Island news by Mrs. Earl Reader The Scugog Island Scouts have already planned a busy year. They started off with a busy week end through Fri- day, Saturday and Sunday selling over 60 dozen cobs of corn at the Redman Fish and Chip corner, the old Centre School corner and Aldred's corner. Many thanks to Redmans and Joel Aldred for allowing them to park on their property, to Mike, Walter and Nina Luchka for donating the corn and to Bill and Linda Jeffrey in helping the Luchka"s to pick it. This was an effort to raise money to purchase camping equip- ment. The boys surely enjoy their all season camp outs in Algonquin Park. The Scouts also hope you have been saving your papers and old magazines throughout the summer. Because they will be around to pick them up Saturday morning after 9 a.m. October 4. This time they will re- member the homes on and near the 7A. A 2nd Scugog Beaver assistant is needed. If you can help, please call Mrs. Ed. Heayn (Beth). During the summer, some- one borrowed a Camp Stove and cooler and forgot to return them. They are badly needed now, so it is hoped that they will be returned as soon as possible. Tho' Saturday's weather was not encouragi ng for the people of Sunrise Beach, the plans and advertising paid off and everyone is thanked for their attendance and par- ticipation. Now they will likely be able to get some desired playground equip- ment for the children to keep them occupied near home. People are gradually find- ing their way back to the Island Church but must remember there is no serv- ice next Sunday Sept. 21 as we wish to attend the Man- chester Anniversary that morning to hear Dr. MacKay. However, Sept. 28 will be a very special day when all the children are prepared to take part in a Rally Day Service. Also, visitors will be present to present a Baptismal Font for dedica- tion. The first Sunday of Octo- ber will be Communion in the morning service. Then the Annual Harvest Home service at the Head Museum Church at 7:30 p.m. The guest speaker will be the renowned Mrs. Lyman Gifford, a lady who has much to offer. Have you noted that the new United Church Mod- erator is a lady, the Rev. Lois Wilson of Kingston. She is the first lady to hold this ~ position and is known to be a very dynamic and outspoken as well as vibrant person- ality. The Island Church Anni- versary is expected to be the 3rd Sunday of October with details to be announced later. This week the Jr. Choir will meet at 7:30 p.m. and the Sr. Choir at 8 when they will prepare the music they are presenting at Manches- ter on Sunday. We are pleased to see new members but there is still room for more. Edna and-John Beckett have returned from an extended motor vacation through the Canadian West and up to Fairbanks, Alaska. Their trip was cut a little shorter than planned because of inclement weather. On Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Don Ashbridge entertained Doreen's family from Kin- mount, Scugog, Peterbor- ough, and Caesarea as well as other friends to honour the daughter of Lois and Harold Luke prior to her approach- ing marriage. Two weeks earlier, Lois and Harold Luke had a simi- _ lar gathering to honour Jane Sonley in a shower prior to her marriage to Raymond Reader Sept. 27. Do you have your tickets for the Community Dance this Sat. night at the Community Hall? If not, call Janice Richardson or Beth Heayn. On Saturday evening approximately 50 or more people attended the surprise party and dance for Tillie and Jack Burnham in the Island Hall. Those who played music for the dances were Bonnie Bell, Bob Cawker, Jack Burnham, Bob Prentice and of course Everett Prentice called. The surprised couple were presented with a coffee table end table and donation of money for lamp purchases, if they wish, in appreciation from the Island people who had enjoyed the mail service through the past 8 or 9 years. The 12 Guides will meet with their new leader Ann Learing from 4 to 6 p.m. If any girls over 9 years still wish to register, please call the'leader above at 985-8259. This house on Perry Street, with the front porch propped up by a two-by-four, has been in this condition for almost two years. It's an eyesore and potential safety hazard, and there are others like it in Port Perry. Yet, municipal officials say there is little the Township can do to correct the situation. [See story.) Local building an eyesore (From page 1) taxes for these two houses have been paid in full by a holding company. The house on Perry Street and the two on Simcoe Street = in-Prince-Albert-are-appa--- rently owned"by Emedi Construction, but attempts to find out if this company is still operating have proved fruitless. In any event, the taxes on these three properties have not been paid this year or in 1979. Mr. Cuddie says that if no taxes are paid next year, the three properties could be UTE Tn TE TT HHT registered by the Township, but there is an additional year to allow the back taxes to be paid in full before the municipality can take them over. is: ~It's not unusual for con- struction on houses to be stopped before completion for a number of reasons. But normally, the mortgage holders will move in and then sell the property to try to get at least some of their money back. That has not been the case with these five properties.
