26 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed, + September 24, 1980 Book has 480 pages Publish history of Bowmanville area "Picture The Way We Were", a pictorial history book of Clarke and Darling- ton Townships has recently been completed by a group of residents from that area. Two of the authors, Lois Adams and Yvonne Cowle, told the Star last week that the 480-page book contains 1320 photographs and 'took more than a year to prepare. The book contains photos of old homes, stores, busi- nesses, community halls, churches, all the schools, sporting events, and of course, people who played a role in the history of Clarke and Darlington Townships, to the southeast of Scugog Township. The oldest photo in the book is of the Tyrone Mill, and was taken in 1859. The mill, by the way, is still operating. Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Cowle said when they first started the project, they were not sure they could get enough photos to make up a book. But they literally knocked on hundreds of doors asking long-time residents to hunt in their attics and basements. "We had nothing but co- operation from people. There is a great deal of interest in local history, and people were more than will- ing to lend us their old photo- graphs," said Mrs. Adams. She believes there are many people living in Scugog Township who would find the" book interesting, especially those who are from the two townships to the east or have family ties there. 100 GALLONS GAS --- WIN oN NN Just bring this card, write your name and address, and deposit in the drum. Ironically, Clarke and Darlington no longer exist, having been amalgamated into the Town of Newcastle with the formation of Re- gional government in 1973. With the assistance of Mrs. Adams' husband Sam, daughter Lynn Mothersill, son-in-law Pat Mothersill, and 'Garfield Shaw, almost all the book preparation was done by the authors, includ- ing type-setting, printing and photography. The book will retail for $35, and the authors say that already they have people interested in buying one of the 2000 copies which were printed. The authors will be at the Bowmanville Museum September 27 and 28, and at the Newcastle Public Lib- rary on October 4 and 5. Mrs. Adams said that although the project invol- ved a great deal of work, it was a labour of love, and she said that any group of people interested in local history of their communities could do the same thing.
