McClelland A three game winning streak came to a halt Sunday night at the Scugog Arena for the Port Perry MoJacks, as they came out on the short end of an 8-5 score in a Junior C contest with the front- running Port Hope Panthers. Despite the loss by the MoJacks, the game was probably the most entertain- ing Junior match at the Scugog Arena so far this season with both clubs play- ing a fast, free-wheeling brand of hockey. The MoJack loss was a combination of two factors: the inability to clear the puck out of their own end, and not being able to finish off offen- sive thrusts to get a clear shot on the Panther net. Several of the Panther goals came after the forwards were allowed' to free-wheel almost at will around Ray Gibson in the MoJack net. Gibson made several good stops, robbing Brian Allin on a couple of breakaways, but he was not as sharp as he had been in previous games. And he didn't get a lot of help from his team-mates inside the MoJack blue line as the defense coughed up the puck on numerous occasions. For the Panthers, Greg Daniel, a short, stocky for- ward, was the spark- plug, as he notched a hat- trick. Brian Allin had a single to go with two assists. Allin is a tall, rangy forward with good speed and he gave Gibson fits all evening. Five players split the scoring chores for the Mojacks. Todd Wilbur, Pete PEEWEE B tie Bruins of Oshawa by Paul Van Camp On Saturday night the George Stone Realtors Pee Wee B team hosted the Cliff Mills Bruins of Oshawa and came away with a 2-2 tie. Port took the lead in the first period with an unassisted goal by Boyd Vanderheul. The Bruins were held score- less until late in the second period with both Port goalies Kevin Cears and Mark Kendall having some very good saves. The Bruins tied it at 1-1. Just over a minute later Jim Abraham scored after a nice pass from Ricky Perry. The Bruins tied it for good in the third period where Port had a disputed penalty call and were playing shorthanded most of the period. Special mention to all Port players who put up a very coach pleasing season opener. Griffiths, Bryan Nicholson, Charlie Brown and Doug Potts. The first period was a fast-paced affair with few whistles. Both teams seemed to be having trouble finishing off plays around the net and the game was score- less until the 17:02 mark when Daniel scored a fluky goal for the Panthers on a slow shot from the blue line that seemed to change direction in front of Gibson. Todd Wilbur got that one back less than two minutes later as he stole a puck from a Panther defender at the Port Hope blue line, and beat goalie Don Newton cleanly with a shot from 15 feet out. interference penalty for the MoJacks when Wilbur scored. Panthers put the game away in the second period when they scored four un- answered goals in the first 12 minutes to build a 5-1 lead that was just too much for the MoJacks to overcome. After Daniel made it 7-3 at 6:04 slapping in a rebound MoJacks made it respect- able with two quick goals by Charlie Brown and Doug Potts who picked up a loose puck behind the Panther net, skated in front and drilled a shot to the top corner. John Doble closed out the scoring for the visitors with 48 seconds left when he was left alone in front of Gibson. MoJacks were called for 13 minor penalties to nine for the Panthers. MoJack defenseman John Robertson got the heave from the game in the third for being the aggressor in a fight with Justin Roy. The MoJacks, whom many observers were writing off at the start of the season, are beginning to play together as a unit and getting good mileage out of the exper- ienced veterans like captain Darrin Jobb, Rob Garrow and rugged Dave Alexander. Todd Wilbur is scoring goals and two newcomers Pete Griffiths and Bryan Nicholson are both smooth- skating forwards who should get better with each game they get under their belts. Port trailed only once in the contest when Lindsay got goals from Peter Weightman and Greg Henly 2:17 apart in the first period. Weightman got his on a rebound at 7:14 and Henly fooled Port goalie Peter Bateman with an excellent deke to his back- hand to give the visiting squad a briefly held lead. Earlier, Fred Cockerton loft- ed in a wrist shot to open the scoring. Port Perry played a solid game. The only weakness showed in the second period when they enjoyed several power play opportunities but came away empty handed. At one point they held a two man power play for two minutes and could not unleash an effective offens- ive. Captain Vaughn McKee showed a good move early in the third period as he eluded - a Lindsay defenceman, cut in front of goaler, Jamie McNale, and flipped it over the Lindsay puck stopper, giving Port Perry a three goal lead. With 8:11 to go Fergusson banged in a rebound after McNale had made a good stop on his first try. Desau- tel also got a rebound mark- er with 1:05 to be contested off a shot by Fergusson. One final bright spot from the Port Perry yiewpoint was the play of netminder Peter Bateman who repeat- edly made some key saves, especially through the first 30 minutes. Pacers defeat Cobourg 8-5 in hockey league opener by Danny Millar A four goal uprising in the third period gave Port Perry Menzies Pacers an 8-5 victory over Cobourg in Port's season opener in the Lakeshore hockey league. Cobourg was leading 5-4 after two periods but Port surged in the last 15 minutes. Kevin Long lead the scoring parade with two goals and an assist. Port showed good scoring balance in that no other skater had more than one goal or three points. Paul Storry, Vaughn McKee, Todd Menzies, John Vaz, Todd Blayone, and Kevin Trapp were the other goal getters. Over the first two periods Port got standout goaltend- ing from Clay Lovering. His most dazzling save came when he stuck out his stick to thwart an attempted deke after being down. Lovering got caught on the outside looking in for: the" first Cobourg goal. He was behind the net trying to corrall the puck when it came loose in front allowing Cobourg to jump on it with 3:33 gone. McKee scored on a short- handed goal with Blayone in the box for tripping at 12:16 on a shot from the point, giving the Pacers a 2-1 advantage. Cobourg tied it with seven seconds left in the opening period when defenceman Keith Trembley left a man open in front of the . net to fire in a rebound. Port went ahead for the second time 57 seconds into the second frame on a power play marker but Cobourg struck twicé in the next five minutes. Cobourg also received good netminding but Vaz was able to score with 3:50 remaining on a high wrist shot as he was being hauled down from behind.
