by John B. McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks are starting to wonder just what they have to do towin a hockey game. A week ago, the team played near flawless hockey, only to lose 2-1 in the dying seconds to Bowmanville. On Sunday night, at the Scugog Arena, MoJacks got into a shoot-out with the Uxbridge Bruins, and when the smoke had cleared, Port Perry was on the losing end of a 12-11 score. The loss to Uxbridge on Sunday came just three days after the MoJacks were whipped 7-3 by the Panthers in Port Hope, and the team has now gone eight straight games-without a win. The game Sunday night was a weird affair, marred throughout by chippy penalt- ies and sloppy defense by both sides. The lead changed hands several times during the game, with the Bruins third period after Port Perry had taken a 9-6 lead by the four minute mark of the final frame. , With Port Perry enjoying the comfortable three goal lead, MoJack defenseman Bob Horten took a double minor penalty for tripping and roughing at 5:26 of the third. The veterans led the way for Port Perry. Steve Lee, Howard Lee, and Jeff John- stone did the scoring, all second year players. But the seniors couldn't have won it without the stellar goaltend- ing of Paul Kingston. Kingston was hot early in the contest as he kicked out a pair of rebound shots. He also made a tough save when _he lost his stick and had to dive for the puck, freezing it beside his net. Merle Schewaga in the MoJack net appeared shakey on the two Bruin power play markers, as both got under his glove as he was trying to trap the puck. After tying the score by the 8:28 mark, Bruins popped three unanswered goals past Schewaga in the next four minutes to take a 12-9 lead. Dan Robertson hit for one, while Peter Arts banged home two. A power play goal at the 17:14 by MoJacks Todd Wilbur and another marker at 19:37 by Rob Garrow with Bruinds short two men brought Port Perry to within one goal, but Bruins held on in the dying seconds to sal- vage the win. MoJacks got an unlucky break late in, the second when goalie Ray Gibson took -=a-hard:shot-on-the-arm:and== he was unable to start the third period. Gibson had been performing well in the nets up to that time. Merle Schewaga came off the bench for the third period and he did not have one of his better nights, looking very unsteady and fighting the puck. After Bruins jumped into an early 2-0 lead in the first period, both power play popped in a rebound off a markers, the teams see- sawed back and forth until early in the third when Port Perry opened up a 9-6 lead on goals by Dave Alexander and Pete Griffiths. Uxbridge got one goal back in the second period on a neat cross rink pass by Wayne Raulick at 3:05. They also forced Kingston to make a splendid save late in the period on a breakaway after Johnstone lost the puck. Left winger Shane Red- shaw scored at 3:11 from the side of the net. Darrell Davis and Kingston collided on the play, with Kingston getting the worst of it. He was down for a couple of minutes before skating the injury off. They were humbled 8-1 in Ux- bridge and though they made it closer at home, were doubled 84 by their bitter * rivals. Nothing excites the sports fans in this area like a head to head confrontation between Port and Uxbridge. The week past must have put these fans in heaven as the two towns met in four diffe- rent hockey games. The second Midget B game was hardly a classic. Ux- bridge won it easily as they outplayed Port in every facet of the game, though neither team was overly spectacu- lar. Geoff McNair set up the first Uxbridge goal at 5:08 of the - first period after he carried the puck around the net and dumped it in front to Pete Prozenko, who put it past Jerry Jackman Jr. in the top of the net. Uxbridge struck 20 _seconds_later when Kevin Jones rifled in a slap shot from the right wing. Mike Campbell made a nice back hand pass across to Salvy Caggiula, who slipped it past Jackman to make it 3-0 with : 2:01 left in the first period. Mark Kerry scored on an awkward slap shot with 37 seconds remaining to put' Port on the board. He sur- prised Uxbridge goaltender Dave Davis, who played softball in Port over the summer, who was screened by defenceman Jones. Port outscored Uxbridge 2-1 in the middle period. Grant Vizely beat new goalie Russell Joosten 13 seconds after he replaced Davis; the first shot on net Joosten their goals on the power play, while Bruins scored six of their markers with a man advantage. As indicated by the score, the game was a poor effort by both teams, and the series of chippy penalties slowed down what was already a slow contest. The MoJacks continue to be plagued by third period blues, but there were a couple of bright spots. Gibson again played well in goal until he was injured, and Dave Alexander, one of "the strongest players, on the \ a ated team, had a robust game, throwing his weight around, Todd Wilbur, who has been bothered by injury. lately, looks like he hasfound the scoring touch again with four goals.
