McClelland One of the smallest Junior C crowds of the season watched the Port Hope Panthers double the Port Perry MoJacks 6-3 at the Scugog Arena Sunday night. With several players out of the line-up with injuries and suspensions, and a few more playing hurt, MoJacks were no match for the smooth- skating Panthers. Except for a couple of brief flourishes, including one in the third period when they managed to tie the score at three each, MoJacks appear- ed sluggish throughout the game. The loss came right on the heels of a 5-3 defeat the night before in Bewdley, and leaves the team with five wins, 11 losses and two ties for 12 points and a share on ninth spot in the ten team league. Panthers jumped-into a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals by John Plumb, Jamie MaclInnes, and a short- handed effort by Terry High- field who broke in on MoJack goalie Raymond Gibson. From that point on, Panthers seemed to play just as hard as necessary, and they put the game away with three unanswered goals late in the final period. Trailing 3-0 at the end of the first, MoJacks struggled back with two goals in the second, one at the 7:23 mark off the stick of Doug Potts. He was ata sharp angle, and the puck trickled past goalie Don Newton after hitting the post. A cross-checking penalty coupled with a minor for unsportsmanlike conduct and a misconduct to Panther bad-boy Rick Evans gave MoJacks the man advantage for almost four minutes. At 16:47 Todd Wilbur took passes from Potts and Bob Horton for the second goal, again one that just trickled across the line. At 3:03 of the final period, MoJacks looked like they might be on the way to a come-back as Al Lewke drill- ed a hard shot from the slot that caught the top left corner over Newton's glove hand. Lewke took a nice centering pass from Pete Griffiths who had been set up by Mike Albrecht. That goal tied the score, but it was short-lived, as 24 seconds later, Panther Gord Lewis got the eventual winner with a long slap shot from just inside the blue line on the right side which seemed to catch Gibson off guard. Less than a minute later, Shawn Wakely deflected a shot from in front with MoJacks Dave Canning off for elbowing. And Justin Rob made it 6-3 at the 12:28 mark when he blasted a shot from the slot after taking a centering pass from the corner where defenseman Mike Healey had coughed up the puck. Aside from the outburst by Evans in the second period and a five minute slashing major to Mike Healey, also in the second period, the - match was a rather tame affair, although the hitting was rugged at times from both sides. Both teams took five minor penalties. MoJacks have not had a banner season so far, and the major problem continues to be in their own end. They have a tendency to give the puck to the forecheckers, and clearing passes or breaks are far from crisp. . Injuries are hurting the team as well. Peter Nichol- son is out with a rib injury. Clark Menzies has missed ~ almost the whole season with knee problems, although he may start skating this week. Doug Potts had to be helped from the ice in the third period with a back injury that has kept him out of the line-up for several games, and Mike Healey limped off after wrenching his knee. Darrin Jobb missed the game because of suspension, but he'll be back this week. With the season just over half completed, MoJacks must start worrying about making the first round of the play-offs. The top eight teams in the ten-club league make the first round, and MoJacks are currently tied for ninth with Bewdley. However, Mo, Jacks have four games in hand over Bewdley, and only a few points separate the fifth and the ninth place teams. The MoJacks are idle from now until this Sunday night when the first place Cobourg Cougars pay a visit to the Scugog Arena. Coach Butch Potts is hoping that the rest will give his walking wound- ed a chance to recuperate, because every game from here on is crucial for the team. Three victories, one tie for Legionaires Score 24 goals in four games by Carol Wilbur The Pee Wee Legionaires have been burning up their league with six wins and a tie. They've found that the name of the game is not only skate, pass and shoot but score as well. The Pee Wees have had a heavy schedule this week with four games in seven days. On Monday, December 1 they hosted Whitby who went down to a 7-2 defeat. On Wednesday, December 3 Pickering M.H.A. were victims of an 8-0 romp. Scoring in these games were Dave Burnett 4,1; Jim White 3,2; Greg Warriner 2,2; Robby Baker 2,1; Tim Cannon 2,0; John Harmon 1,1; Craig Menzies 1,1; Andy Sytsma 1,0;~Jeff Cockerton 0,3; Lee Wilbur 0.2; David Culbert 0,1; Steven Durham 0,1. Centre Thompson, who has' , SST AD ih been playing with the Jr. C: MoJacks recently, found the mark four times and set up Mikkelsen's "goal. Brian Dickson is the possessor of a hard shot from the right side and he used it to score two goals and add two assists. Jim Kane got the only goal that Thompson's line did not set up and it came after a pass ahead from Tim Parker with 5:35 left in the first period, the second goal of the game. It was a very strange match.' Oshawa got a quick start out of the gate and beat Ken Harman on the first shot on goal of the game, 39 seconds after the opening faceoff. They also scored two more goals in short order as it looked as though they were outskating and outhustling Port severely. John Mackey scored twice and Rod Vernon hit once before Port got untracked in the early minutes. Before the end of the first period, Port had stormed back to tie it 3-3, on a Thompson slap shot after he got around Vernon. The last two periods were wide open but Port held the upper hand. They skated off with a three goal advantage at the end of the second period and maintained it through the end of the third. Parker was ejected with 1:21 yet to be played as he picked up his second ten minute misconduct in as many games. The automatic minor penalty that went with it gave him a total of five minors during the game, meaning that he had accu- mulated a total of 20 penalty minutes in one game alone. Parker also got a miscon- duct in the previous penalty filed game (over 80 min- utes) against Cobourg. Speedster Joe Williams, playing right wing, had probably the best game of his career as he scored six times. ies popped in the tying goal assisted by Dave Burnett and Chris Lane. The final score 3-3. Oshawa returned the favour by scoring two in the second period. Port turned. on-the gas. in the third period scoring four goals. Tim Cannon scored two goals and 1 assist, Lee Wilbur and Dvid Culbert had singles with Jim White pick- ed up two assists. Chris Lane, Dave Burnett, Greg Warriner and Andy Sytsma . had one assist each. Oshawa replied once more to make the final score 6-3. The management of the Pee Wee team should be well pleased to see these boys starting to reach their peak under their guiding hands.
