14 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., December 17, 1980 Sports with Return home with two trophies Atoms victorious in Oak Ridges tournament | by Bob Jamieson Port Perry Malmont Farms Atom All Stars went into Oak Ridges knowing that the team from Sutton which had beaten them for the championship in Brad- ford would also be at the Oak Ridges tournament. We were rather fortunate to get a good draw in the first game against Tottenham. The final score of this game was 2-1 in favour of Port Perry. Little Robbie Brown got the first marker at 2:27 of the first period. Tottenham tied it up in the second period and "good old reliable' John Lally came through in the third with the game winner assisted by Brad Menzies. This was the only game on Saturday for our guys, so Punch told everyone to go home bed ear)x begefuse the real action would come on Sunday.-- e first game on Sunday at noon was against a minor atom team from Unionville. The final score was 6-0 in favour of Port Perry. Warren Geer was the real marksman in this game scoring three goals on some five solo efforts and also providing some great defen- sive work. Robbie Jamieson got an unassisted goal in the second period when he went down the sidelines around behind the net and tucked it in the corner. Brad Menzies got one of his numerous goals in the second period assisted by Scott Feasby. John Lally rounded out the goal scoring with assists going to Steve Connors and Scott Feasby. Again the final score was 6-0. After defeating Tottenham 2-1 and Unionville 6-0, the game of the day was in front of us, Sutton. - This game was action packed from beginn- ing to end. Coach Barkey and trainer Dave Ballingall had the boys totally charged up as well we also had the Port Perry fans charged up and cheering. = Meanwhile Punch was pacing frantical- ly in the players box. We were determined not to be beaten for the second time. These guys came out like gangbusters from the open- ing whistle. At 7:01 of the first period John Lally scored to give us the lead. At 5:07 of the second period Brad Menzies scored from Steve Connors and John Lally. Atthe 31 second mark of the third period John Lally scored a beautiful goal on a breakaway assisted by Brad Traves. Sutton got a goal at the 8:38 mark of the third and we thought our boys might get a little down, but that was not to be as Steve Connors took a pass from Daryl Leatherdale and Brad Traves and sent it high up in the corner of the net. Sutton managed to get a goal with three seconds left, but the final bell told the tale. Port against good old Perry had defeated Sutton 4-2 to win the Oak Ridges Atom Tournament. Championship. Oak Ridges added a new wrinkle to tournament play ° by having a Grand Champ- ionship between the Championship team and the consolation champions, who in this case were from Tottenham. This game started at 6 p.m. The boys had already played at 12 noon and 2:30 p.m. Their third game in the afternoon was a good contest with Port Perry the eventual winners by a 4-2 score. Port Perry got their first goal at the 3:53 mark of the first period by Brad Menzies unassisted. Two minutes later Warren Geer, in one of his many rushes, scored unassisted to give Port Perry a 2-0 lead. An excellent play came when Robbie Brown stole the puck from the Tottenham defence- man and went down the ice and scored. The final marker for Port Perry came in the third period when John Lally scored unassisted. The final score again was 4-2 for Port Perry and thus, they won the Grand Champion- ship. It was sure nice to walk out of the Oak Ridge Arena with a trophy under each arm. The final results of this tournament are very gratify- ing to the coaches and manager, because the boys really came together as a team and played extremely well. - It is gratifying to go into another arena and have people compliment you on what a fine team you have. It reflects on the coaches, and manager as well as the Port Perry Minor Hockey system. The real winners today were the boys them- selves, and without the able assistance of guys like Andrew Steel, Mike Sorley, Mark Barkey and Jamie Menzies and fine goaltending by Stacey Ballingall, these results would not be possible. Pacers by Danny Millar Port Perry Menzies Pacers blew a 3-0 first period lead and had to settle for a single point in a 5-5 tie with the lowly Pickering Village team in Midget A hockey action Monday, December 8. For the first 15 minute frame it looked as though the Pacers would come up with a win equalling their 9-3 triumph over the same team with ease. But they perform- ed horrendously in the middle period and needed a goal from Paul Storry to skate off with a 4-4 tie. And it was quite a goal that Storry scored. He put two moves on defenceman Bruce Kovack and then fired over Ap - ah I ATVISE oy NE The Atom All-Stars won the Championship at Oak Ridges tournament. Port Perry trounced their opposition by a score of 9 to 1. The Green Machine got four unanswer- ed goals in the first. Warren Geer opened the scoring assisted by Brad Menzies and Mark Barkey. Other goals were: Robbie Brown from Daryl Leatherdale and Andrew Steele; Steven Connors from Warren Geer and Andrew Steele; and Scott Feasby from Mike Sorley and Jamie Menzies. lead 3-0 settle goaltender Troy Kilpatrick at 9:17. Defensive problems again proved to be Picker- ing's Achilles heel, like they were in the first meeting. Left winger John Vaz opened goal parade at the 2:40 mark of the first period when he snapped a shot past Kilpatrick. Vaz did not take a full wind-up on the shot but still managed to get lots of leverage behind it. Early in the period Port defenceman Kevin Trapp levelled Steven Britsky with a body check inside the Port Perry blue line. Storry got his first goal of a pair on the kind of shot that give puck stoppers night- mares. He unloaded from Fin RR Port added three more in the second to lead 7-0 at the end of two. Mark Barkey scored on a power play from John Lally and Warren Geer, then John Lally scored assisted by Warren Geer and Brad Menzies. Jamie Menzies closed the period with assists going to Mike Sorley and Warren Geer. Lindsay got their lone goal in the third but Port Perry came right back with two more. Brad Menzies got one, from Robbie Jamieson and Warren Geer and Robbie Jamieson from Brad Traves and Warren Geer. It was a big night for outside the blue line and Kilpatrick dropped to his knees. The puck slid in off his pads. Port added a power play goal before the first period drew to a close and then they let up in the second period and were outplayed severe- ly. Brad Spagnuolo got Pickering's first goal on a backhand after a Port give- away in its own zone. Spagnuolo scored again before Scott Wallace and Kevin Long incurred minor infractions, forcing the Pacers to play two men down for 1:25. Pickering took advantage of the situation before either man returned to the ice, with Brian Shark- Steele, Mark Barkey, Robbie Jamieson. Front [left to right], Mike Sorley, Robbie Brown, Stacey Ballingall, John Lally, Jamie Menzies, Warren Geer, Brad Menzies, and Darryl Leatherdale. Warren Geer as he came out of the game with six points. Added to the one-sided play was a very sluggish ice. Both teams had a hard time moving the puck. Friday December 12 Port Perry again met Lindsay, this time as the hosting club. Malmont once again came out at the winning end of a 4-1 score. Lindsay was a much improved club over the prev- ious night and Port was forced to work harder to earn the win. Mike Sorley opened the scoring on a pretty play from -Jamie Menzies and John Lally. Lindsay tied it up at the end of the first period. for 5-5 man scoring from the slot, and previously Darren Mason slipped his own rebound past Clay Lovering. Port Perry was playing at a severe manpower short- age. Defenceman Keith Tremblay was sitting out his one game suspension for a gross misconduct taken last week and the team's five Bantam players were in a game out of town. They were forced to play with two lines, centered by Long and Storry. Britsky went off for high sticking Long with 7:12 left in the game and 21 seconds later Wallace scored on a rebound after corralling the oose puck and slamming it past Kilpatrick. It gave Port . Mike put Port ahead again with a goal assisted by John Lally. The Green Machine then. took over with two more goals in the third, John Lally scored from Robbie Brown and Warren Geer. John Lally completed the scoring with Robbie Brown picking up the assist. Malmont's next home game is Friday December 19 at 7:00 p.m. against Bowmanville. This should be a good game. The last time these two clubs met, they played to a draw. Come out and support our fine Atom team. tie a 5-4 lead, the first time they were ahead since losing the 3-0 advantage in the second period. But they could not manage to hold that slim lead either. Tim Laroche's wrist shot from the right side rolled past the post behind Clay Lovering with 2:34 remaining. Jamie Lane missed a pain- fully close chance to win the game for the Pacers when his shot rolled over the cross bar with two seconds left. The Pacers face a reduced schedule now with the coming of the holiday. They play in the Port Perry tourn- ament late in December. © A §
