~ Blackstock, C & B broombadll victors by Danny Millar The opening broomball game between Blackstock and Emmerson ended five seconds prematurely on Sunday, December 14 because of the build up of hostilities between the two teams culminating in a brief flare-up in front of the Emmerson net. Blackstock had to 'come back after Emmerson scored the first goal to win 3-1. Referee Dennis Syms, who was a last minute replace- ment, ordered the game halt- ed after a brief shoving incident in front of Emmer- son goalie Rick Arsenault. Just 11 seconds earlier Blackstock's Donnie Toutant was given a five minute major for spearing and then throwing a rabbit punch at an opposing player, hitting him in the neck, and knock- ing him down. By that time, however, the most lively scrap of the game had concluded. Emmerson's Danny Brown and Rick Alpe of Blackstock went toe to toe at the end of the second period. Several punches were thrown and both combatants ended up on the ice. Syms also had his problems in the second game when he tossed out C&B Livestock's Ron Red#han ~with=4:06 left after Redman had argued a hooking call. C&B stayed two points in front of second place Black- stock in that game, register- ing an easy 7-1 win over Brian's Towing. Brian's played an undisciplined positional game against C&B and they paid dearly for it. Robert Evans had a four point game scoring twice and setting up goals by Doug Scott and Bruce Woodrow. Scott's goal followed one by Ashbridge, giving C&B a two goal lead to take into the second period. Scott was situated at the edge of the crease from where he con- verted a pass from the oppo- site side from Evans. Scott was victimized for Brian's only goal in the first minute of the middle period when he coughed up the ball at his own blue line to Jim O'Neill, who passed ahead to Lawrence Peeters for the goal. Evans added a power play goal from Ken Fraser, who played a strong game in picking up a goal and an assist, just after Brian's scored, removing any momentum they might have built up. Don Phinney found the short side behind Wayne Cox and slipped the ball by him to make it 4-1 with 8:08 to go in the second frame. Less than a minute later Fraser scored on the tail end of a three way passing play from-Evans and Mark Lee. It is a play C&B uses often, where the winger on the far side, in this case left winger Evans, passes off to the man in the slot (Lee), who then turns it over to the other side of the crease. Basically, it looks like a triangle. Bruce Woodrow and Evans scored in the third period. Blackstock had momen- tarily tied the standings by winning the first game as Jim Bryant led the way with a goal and an assist. But they did it the tough way, allowing Emmerson to take a one goal advantage in the first period when Wayne Slute scored with Black- stock's Gord Bryans sitting in the penalty box. The first half of the game was uneventful but it picked up as Blackstock seemed to get a lift when the Alpe- Brown fracas had ended. Bryant tied it less than a minute into the third period and then Eldon Wagg scored the winner at 11:50 after completing a pass play from Bryant, similar to the one Fraser scored on. Bryans added the insur- . ance marker with 39 seconds to go when he and Tom Wotten went in on an empty net after Arsenault had been removed. Wotton elected to pass off to Bryans, who was in better scoring position directly in front of the open cage. Blackstock and C&B square off in two consecutive crucial games over the next two Sundays. If they win both, they move into first place, if they lose both, they go down by six points, and, in all likelyhood, would become tied with Utica, assuming the Plow Jockeys win both weeks. The Jocks fell six points off the C&B pace when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Larocque Electric. Bernie McEnaney scored for Utica while Kevin Martens replied for Larocque. Larocque outplayed its higher ranked adversaries but they were stonewalled in the late stages. Harvey Parrinder took a roughing penalty and Larocque swarmed the Utica net over the last three minutes. The Plow Jockeys tried desper- ately to clear the ball. In return, Larocque was just as frantic to score but couldn't. Marten did manage to score earlier when he got the ball at his own blue line, beat one defender in his own zone and then raced down the length of the ice to slip it behind Don Card. It came while Larocque was short- handed with Richard Honey off for cross checking. McEnaney broke the ice after a scoreless first period with 4:00 left in the second when he knocked a close in shot behind Kevin Beer. Novice all-stars win two out of three games by Don Steele On Monday December 8 the Port Perry Pearce Auctioneers travelled:to the: Don Beer Arena to take on the Pickering Hockey Assoc- iation. This was our second meeting with this team, and the battle was much tougher this time against a much improved PHA team. It was end to end action through a scoreless first period. How- ever, Danny Maw finally broke the deadlock on a fine play from Jarett Harman and Doug Adams at 1:43 into the second period. Pickering tallied a minute later to even the score at one. Still in the second period, Clair Cornish put the puck over the should- er of the PHA netminder with assists going to Scot Menzies and Brian Appleby. Midway into the third period, Eric Grosvenor banged in a rebound after the initial shot by Chris Legere. With 1:41 remaining, Pickering beat Ryan LaRocca for the final goal of the game. Pickering Village came to Port Perry on Friday, Dec. 12th and were subsequently blanked by the Auctioneers 5-0. Jarett Harman started the scoring on a breakaway at the 36 second point. At 4:16, Chris Legere passed ahead to Jeff Mills who fired off a fine wrist shot to score. Just over a minute later, Clair Cornish blasted a shot by the Pickering netminder but Scot Menzies picked up the rebound, passed it back to Clair who drove the puck into the net. At 3:17 the Pickering netminder was FRENCH FORD MERCURY SALES for your needs in SALES & LEASING of all MAKES & MODELS see... The second period saw no scoring as the Auctioneers seemed to lay back a little, playing a more defensive game. The same play continued throughout the third period, until with 4 seconds remain- ing Jarett Harman scored the fifth and final goal on a three-way passing play from Jeff Mills and Michael Feasby. On Sunday, December 14th Port Perry travelled to Brooklin to play another Lakeshore League match, this time playing Whitby. Again, the Auctioneers showed their depth, defeat- ing their opponents 4-1. Port scored once in the first period on a fine effort by Sean Bradbury, who stole Price break on lift This season, the high price of lift tickets is apparently getting may skiers down. Most area operators have found it necessary to in- crease their prices to make up for rising costs. Few, however, have found a way to make this increase less painful for the public. Dagmar Ski Resort, near Port Perry, has taken a step to ease the crunch for at least one segment of the skiing public. The resort, which is less than an hour's drive for most Metro and area residents, has intro- duced a new pricing policy that takes into consideration the skier who doesn't want to spend the entire day on the slopes. New computerized tickets systems will allow skiers to pay for their skiing at Dagmar by the hour. -In this way, ski buffs who wish to ski for only a few hours at a time - morning, afternoon or evening, will not be required to pay the price of a full day ticket. ~minder's pads. the puck at center ice and fed it ahead to Jeff Mills who shot between the Whitby net- mark of the second period Michael Butt fired a back- hand shot into the net, unassisted. Whitby got their only marker early in the third period, catching our defence out of position deep in the offensive zone. But, Jeff Mills came back at 9:04 taking a pass from Michael Butt and beating the Whitby netminder on the stick side. Jarett Harman finished the scoring with 30 seconds remaining on a great effort, assisted by Sean Bradbury. The Auctioneers next game is on Friday, Dec. 19th at 8:00 p.m. when Nobleton will be in town for an exhibition match. "At the 9:42 PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., December 17, 1980 -- 17 Pee Wee B's romp to win by Paul Van Camp On Saturday night the George Stone Realtors Pee Wee B team hosted Uxbridge and defeated them 9-4. The game was very close check- ing in the first two periods with Port not really getting too many chances as they were not up to par being short of players. As the teams went off the ice for the break before the third period it was 3-2 for Port. Just over thirty seconds into the third from Ron Brown shot it past the Uxbridge goalie on a pass from Karl Durham. This started Port's engines and it was all Port for the rest until the final two minutes when we were short handed. But the great penalty kill- ing of Ron Brown and Mike Gibson held off any Uxbridge power play goals.
