by Danny Millar The playoff race in the Port Perry Broomball Association did not get any tighter Sunday, January 18 as the top three teams C&B, Utica Farm Equipment and Blackstock all won. C&B Livestock remains five points up on second place Blackstock with three games to play. Since C&B has beaten their closest rival in every meeting this season, the only way Blackstock could finish first would be to win all three of its remaining games while C&B lost their three. They have a chance to help themselves next week when they confront C&B. The two top teams have relatively equal games through the remainder of the regular season. After Black- stock, C&B takes on Utica and Emmerson while Black- stock also tangles with Utica. Their final opponent is Larocque. If the teams stay the way they are currently, Utica would face Blackstock in the opening round while C&B took on Larocque for the second year in a row. They should remain in these positions barring: a miracle - by Blackstock. Blackstock had the tough- est time of the contenders as they nipped rapidly improv- ing Emmerson Insurance 2-1 on a pair of goals by center- man David Dalton. Blackstock had the game its own way through the first two periods but a stubborn goalkeeper in Rick Arsen- ault and a couple of bad breaks kept them to one goal. Emmerson tightened it with a goal by captain John Gerber on Charlie Dennis's rebound mid-way through the final game. The key play was probably a second period penalty shot that Arsenault kicked aside. It came as a result of an Emmerson defenceman smothering the ball in his own crease while Arsenault was still in. Blackstock had a pair of close chances in the first period and Emmerson ran into two straight penalties that forced them to play shorthanded for later when So close and yet so far. Blackstock nipped over two minutes. Arsenault stonewalled them. Dalton broke the ice at 11:41 of the second period when he cut across the front of the net and put in a rebound from the slot. He added a controversial goal at 4:54 of the third period when he tipped in a ball as it was rolling across the goal line. His foot was clearly in the crease but the official corr- ectly ruled that the ball had entered the crease first. Emmerson debated to no avail. SHUTOUT - Goalkeeper Keith Fraser was hardly tested as C&B rolled up an uninspired 4-0 triumph over Brian's Towing on the two point efforts of "Ron Redman and Bill Bridge. Redman recently shifted from the forward line to the EL OT of Oshawa). 5 Port Perry Snowmobile Club "RIDE-IN BREAKFAST" On January 25th, 1981, Port Perry Snowmobile Club presents their Annual Ride-in Breakfast, from 9 A.M. to 12 Noon, followed by a Poker Rally (with prizes donated by Taylor's Small Engines Registration - 12 Noon to 1 P.M. Redman looked sharp in his new position as he scored the first goal of the contest 4:20 after it had commenced. It came on a shot from the right point into the far corner of the net. Bridge drew his first of two assists on the goal. That was the only tally chalked up against substi- tute goaler Bill Fielding. He replace Wayne Cox for most of the first period. Cox arrived with less than a minute remaining. Robert Evans scored from Doug Scott 1:10 into the second period while the teams were playing five aside. Bill Peeters and C&B's Mark Lee engaged in a brief wrestling match at the end of the first period and both were given offsetting minors for their troubles. Redman drew an assist on the third C&B goal, by Lee, and Bridge sent a pass across the slot to Ashbridge, who fired high into the top of the net, to wrap up the scoring. Peeters had Brians best scoring try of the game when he fired over the top of the open net while Fraser was out of position. Previously, Peeters jersey had been shredded in a scrap with Larry Page. Utica scored the most one- sided victory of the game as they trounced Larocque 6-1 on the heels of a standout performance by forward Mike Mitchell. Mitchell scored one goal and assisted on four others. Mitchell and Aldon Smith comprise much of Utica's offensive firepower and the team is usually in trouble when they are shut down. Winger Phil Kenton will also supply some work in the opposition end when he gets back to A-1 condition. He had missed a couple of .months with a knee injury. Smith converted three of Mitchell's passes, account- ing for half the Jockey's scoring. Smith started the spree 3:57 into the fray as Utica buzzed all around goal- keeper Kevin Beer. It came on a power play with Dave Giannini off. Rick Collins got the only goal that Mitchell didn't participate in during the second period, putting Utica ahead 2-0 with the eventual winner. » EM SN thon Vy Cod iY f Cais y FFSEHS EFS ERR eit Nido ails ekhiidpaidd i ibid dial ipa TENE ATE VISE th ALAA VVIR, PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., January 21, 1981 -- 13 Utica, Blackstock, C&B keep on winning Emmersons in this game by a 2-1 score, and there was lots of action around the goal-tenders. Keith Ellicott woordd on a medium range blast as Utica smothered Larocque in its own zone again. Smith got the fifth goal on a screened shot.
