2-- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wed., January 21, 1981 SLA WAR GH LA (LEARTNS | Tories select February 25 to choose successor to Bill Newman Uxbridge High School has been named as the location for the Durham-York Conservation nomination meeting on February 25. Riding association presi- dent Merrill Van Camp of Blackstock said the date and location for the nomination were set by the association executive last Wednesday night. He said the association . expects more than 1000 people at the meeting. Uxbridge High School was selected because it is centrally located in the riding, and has an auditor- ium large enough to handle that many people. The nomination meeting is necessary to select a succes- sor to Bill Newman who announced last year that he is getting out of active politics and will not be seek- ing re-election. Mr. New- man currently holds Durham-York riding for the Conservatives at Queens Park. It is expected that Ontario Premier William Davis will call a provincial election for some time this $100 prize for drug abuse poster contest A first prize of $100 is being ~ offered in the annual Alcohol and Drug Abuse Poster competition which is open to all high school students in Durham Region. Sponsored by the Regional Health Council, the competi- tion allows students to use their own discretion with colours, paints, textures, etc. for the poster, but the size should be about 24 inches by 18 inches. Cash prizes are also being offered for the second and third place posters, and an award will be presented to the school of the winning entrant. The contest opened last week and the final deadline date for submissions is February 28. Uxbridge Anyone from Scugog Township interested in submitting a poster in this competition should contact the Health Unit at 668-6214 in . Whitby or Port Perry High School student Sheila Cannon who is a member of the Health Council's Region- al Youth Advisory Commit- tee, along with students from 'other high schools through- out Durham. The Health Council says that the winning poster should present "the most effective prevention and education message on alcohol and or drug abuse." On February 6 and 7, posters from last year's competitions will go on display at the Oshawa Shopping Centre as a kick-off to the competition and as a way to educate the public spring or early sunfmer. The selection of a candi- date to carry the Tory banner in Durham-York in the next provincial election is generating considerable interest as three hopefuls have officially declared their. intentions to seek the nomination. Scugog former Durham Board of Education chairman Yvonne Christie stated her intentions last fall. Rev. Reg. Rose, minister of the Anglican Churches in Port Perry and Blackstock, and a long-time Scugog rep on Durham Region council announced his candidacy late last month, and Ross Stevenson, who operates a farm north of Uxbridge made his intentions official last week. (See separate story) Mr. Van Camp said that voting at the nomination will be done by delegates select- ed prior to the meeting. He said each of the 146 polls throughout the riding will send four voling resident and' delegates to the meeting (along with two alternates) and the 30 members of the association executive will also get a vote. Durham-York is a mostly rural riding stretching/from the northern part of Picker- ing Township to Lake Simcoe in the north and east to include all of Scugog Town- ship. Keswick, Uxbridge, and Port Perry are the three largest communities in the riding. In the last provincial election in June, 1977, Mr. Newman was easily return- ed to office over opponents Al McPhail of the New Democratic Party and Liz Catty for the Liberals. On January 29, the Cartwright P.C. Association will be holding a meeting at the Nestleton Community Hall to hear the candidates who are seeking the nomination and to select the delegates from Cartwright who will cast ballots at the nomination on February 25 in Uxbridge. More land for dump? Durham Region is consid- ering adding another 95 acres to the Scugog dump west of Port Perry. A committee of regional councillors recommended last week that studies be conducted on land just west of the dump to see if it is suitable for use as a landfill site. The present dump has only about six years of use left. The extra 95 acres would be used to extend the life of the facility. Regional officials say the would take about seven months and environmental hearings might take another year. He said it would be at least 18 months before the region knew if it could use the land as a dump. The present dump is about 34 acres and has been operat- ing for more than 10 years. 1980 REPORT TO SCUGOG WAR MEMORIAL PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD THE REGIONAL D) MUNICIPALITY OF DURHAM DURHAM NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING Take notice that the Regional Planning Committee will con- sider at a meeting to be held on: JANUARY 27, 1981 AT 10:00 A.M.
