As a result of this outbreak, a survey was undertaken in 1980 to determine the extent of the disease. The field corn varieties in which infection was detected in 1980, were identified by farmers as follows: DeKalb X16, Funk G4065, Hyland HL2219, Pioneer 3901, 3906, 3950, 3965, 3978, 3990, 3992, 3994, 3995, Stewart 2501, Stewart 2660, and Trojan T737. Several sweet corn variet- ies were also infected and these were identified as: Burgundy Delight, Golden Beauty, Golden Jubilee, Jubilee, Seneca Explorer, Seneca Gem, Seneca Sun- beam, Silver Queen, Style- pak, Sunset and Super Sweet. There is no chemical yet available to protect corn varieties against this disease however, seed offered for sale will be from disease- free fields. No evidence of the disease was found during the field inspections of all seed corn grown in Canada Jesus Said ... in the 1980 season. Also, field corn seed will only be aflow- ed into Canada if it has been found free from disease, either by field inspection or by tests of the seed itself. Sweet corn, all of which is imported, must also have been shown to be free of the disease or have been treated by a chemical in the United States for control. Use of Chlorophenols Restricted: Farmers who have been accustomed to using pentachlorophenol (PCP) as a wood preserva- tive, will find that they will be unable to purchase this product in 1981. This is as a result of a ban being placed on a group of chemicals known as chlorophenols for certain uses. The ban prohibits the use of these products around the farm and home because of possible health and environ- mental hazards, and where there is a possibility of these materials contaminating food products. Some essential uses, such as treatment of hydro and telephone poles, railway ties, fences, etc., will be allowed to continue. "Except a Man be Born Again, He Cannot See the Kingdom of God."
