Tell that to Port Perry Legionnaires. Trailing 5-0 to Wellington early in the second period of the championship game Port rallied to tie it 5-5 and then 6-6 before finally succumb- ing 7-6 to a powerful squad in the annual PeeWee tourna- ment at Scugog Arena Satur- day, January 24. It was a remarkable comeback by the hosting team, which had looked impressive in two earlier wins over Uxbridge and Lakefield. They were up against a tremendous for- ward with the nondescript name of Smith, who was in on at least six of the Welling- ton goals, including his scoring of the winner. They fell behind 6-5 before tying it again and then finally ended up losing on Smith's goal. Wellington showed a strong passing and skating team, which made for a very entertaining hockey game. Smith was at the controls on offence as he scored the first two goals, set up the fourth with an excellent play, and scored the fifth early in the second period. Port Perry defenders looked in awe of Smith for the first period. The first few minutes went end to end as the two free-wheeling teams measured each other before Smith warmed up. His first goal came at 2:37 of the first ten minute frame when he stickhandled around de- fenceman Jeff Cockerton and Andy Sytsma and then deked a sprawling John Moore to score. Moore had been a standout during the first match against Ux- bridge. Less than a minute later Smith cut past Sytsma and fired a high wrist shot into Moore's upper glove hand corner. He assisted on the third goal when Moore blocked his shot but failed to corral the rebound. He relayed a superb cross ice pass to Pickard to score Wellington's fourth goal with 3:06 left in the frame. There were very few whistles during the first period and the four goals represented about half of the play stoppages. There wasn't an icing call made until under four minutes to play. Smith made it 5-0 at 2:39 of the second period before Port Perry staged its monumental comeback. This observer had to leave early in the second period to attend an out of town game and does not have any further details on the final. Brad Menzies, who performed strongly through- out the first two games scored three times while rearguards Lee Wilbur and Andy Sytsma scored twice to lead the Legionnaires to a 9-0 win over a Lakefield squad that had entered the game with a previous win, the same as Port. Goaltender Stephen Whelan got credit for the shutout but he was not tested severely as Moore was in the other two games. It is the first year on the team for Whelan, who was with the Atom champions last year. Moore is wearing the yellow jersey for the second season. Another first year player, right winger Burnett scored the first goal for Port with 4:58 remaining in the open- ing period with a slap shot along the ice from the top of the face-off circle on the right side. Sytsma scored late in the period on a short handed attempt after Greg Warriner had been caught hooking. Wilbur scored a neat goal 1:16 into the second period when he rushed down the ice, something he did successful- ly often, passed off to John Harman and then tipped in the puck after Harman shot. Officially, Harman was .given credit. Menzies scored 11 seconds later and the route was on. By the end of the second period, Wilbur had scored twice and Menzies had struck once more. Menzies set up the sixth by carrying the puck around the net and dumping it into the slot for Wilbur and then scored himself ten seconds later on a crisp passing play that he finalized from Warriner and Tim Cannon. Centerman Menzies got his - third--and final - goal -51 seconds into the third period when Lakefield goalkeeper Stephen Howas dropped his wrist shot and watched it roll over the line. Sytsma, who also per- formed well from his back- line position during the two initial contests, wrapped up the lopsided fray with his wrist shot at 7:09. In the past few seasons, minor hockey parents have been justifiably criticized for bad sportsmanship in the crowds, pressure tactics on the athletes, and interfering with the coaches. They are one of the biggest problems at every arena where minor hockey is played and probab- ly always will be. But the mothers of the Port Perry Legionnaires demonstrated a touch of class and hospital- ity on the day long tourna- ment when they fed the visi- ting youngsters with home cooked pastries and soft drinks, which they prepared and served after the games. The Legionnaires looked less than awesome when they struggled to a 3-2 «PR OURN Port Perry PeeWee Legionaires won the silver medal in the annual tournament Saturday sponsored by Port Perry Legion. Uxbridge came back to tie it before - Menzies scored a power play marker 19 seconds prior to the end of the period. Uxbridge tied it for the second time with 4:57 left in the middle segment but Menzies got what eventually became the winning goal from the front of the net after a pass from behind by Warriner. Warriner picked up two assists in the second game and three against Lakefield. Port Perry now takes on Uxbridge head to head in the opening round of Ontario Minor Hockey Association playoffs. A over Pickering ing a quick burst of speed. Earlier in the first period, Kemp had been stopped on an identical play. Kevin Power supplied Pickering with one of its few bright spots early in the second period when he labelled Howard Lee with a well delivered, open ice body check inside the Port Perry blue line. It is the kind of good clean check seldom seen in Bantam hockey. Ian Dickson, transformed to the forward line after starting out on defence, scored the only goal of the second period on a rebound after center Mike Dickson's backhander was blocked. It came with only six seconds left in the session, and as late goals often do, it gave Port a big boost in the final frame. Steve Lee and Kevin Ferguson scored quick markers early in the third period before Kemp clicked for his second at 4:47. - He stole the puck, wheeled around the defence, an whipped a shot through Mason's legs. Port performed without the services of center Jeff Johnstone, who was ill. They also lost captain-defence- man Vaughan McKee for a spell in the second period after he cut his finger. He returned for the final frame.
