Roberts put up a stout defense to win the Central Ontario final at Durham College Saturday evening. Despite the loss, the Port Perry Rebels enjoyed an excellent season this year. [See story for details.] Pee Wee B team captures finals by Paul Van Camp On Saturday night the George Stone Realtors Pee- Wee B team hosted the Stirling team for the third game of the series and came away with an 8-2 victory. It seemed to be a close game until the end of the first period when it was 2-2. The Port team then put it to- gether again and skated over the opposition easily. The Stirling team started to be very chippy as their final game was coming to an end. They played very clean hockey until the final period when Port had numerous power-play attempts. This was a very easy series for the Port team as they out- scored them 30-5 in three games. Doug Dusty led the charge for Port Perry with two goals and two assists. Willie Edwards -and- Ron Brown both added two goals and one assist. Karl Durfam earned one goal and two assists and Blair Phillips picked up the other marker. Boyd Vander- heul and Mike Gibson each gained two assists, while Brian Dean, Rick Perry, and Jim Abraham had singles. Kevin Cearns played a fine game for Port. In the nets stopping a chance before it was too close. This ended the quarter finals for Port.. They now advance to play eithek Woodbridge or Gravenhurst in the semi-finals. The first game will most likely be this weekend in Port, so if you see a poster in town with the date on it come out and see what we can do. It is hoped that Port will not get over confident as they only played one really fine game this last series and won 16-2, maybe they were just taking it easy for the next round. For a team to do well, it needs support from the fans so. why don't you try. to support a team that could do well by Danny Millar Port Perry High School Junior Rebel's hopes for a Central Ontario Basketball Crown were shattered by a strict GL~_ Roberts zone defence as they lost 46-28 at Durham College in the final Saturday, March 7. Earlier in the day, Port looked flawless in dismantling Kénner of Peterborough 70-47 en route to the finals. Port Perry was simply unable to penetrate the Lakers tightened 2-1 zone defence and Tod Wilbur and Robert Burnett had terrible luck shooting from the perimeter. With nobody inside to contest them, Scott Horrobin and Tim Pye controlled the rebounds for the Lakers and wrote finis to the Rebel's season long dreams. With the win, Roberts avenged-the loss-a-week ago in the LOSSA final game. They also became the only team all year to beat Port twice, having done it during the regular season meeting as well. Port was held to a measly 12 points in the first three quarters, and were never in the game after falling behind 12-2 at the end of the first quarter. The only points thé Rebels got during that frame came after Peter Stone hit on a jump shot seven minutes after the opening tip-off. It was Stone who was rendered the most in- effective against the zone. As the teams 'big man" it was his responsibility to get the ball down low close to the basket, but Horrobin and Pye combined to handcuff him. He was counted on to as well but Horrobin cleared most of the boards. It was a Port Perry High School Junior Basketball team were silver medalists in the Central Ontario finals held Saturday at Durham College, losing to a tough "teaiii from G.L. Roberts Collegiate. Front row from left: Pete Christie, Rob Burnett, Todd Wilbur, Peter supply rebounding strength complete reversal from the previous week when Stone held the upper hand. Stone ended the game with a scoring total of 13 points. His field goal in the first quarter was the only time he scored until the fourth. By then, the Lakers had put in several :substitutes and the big center rolled up 11 more points. Offensively," Port had terrible fortune around the basket. Wilbur missed consistently from the base- line, a favourite position of his, as the ball repeatedly bounced off the rim into the awaiting hands of Lakers. A typical shot was Peter Christie's that rolled around the inside of the rim at least three times before rolling out. Guard Brian Dayes set much of the tempo while the Lakers were on offence. He was nearly unstoppable on drives to the hoop, collecting 12 points. Horrobin finished with 16. The only change between the Rebels that faced Roberts and those that clobbered Kenner was that Port wore red jerseys for one of the few.times this year against Roberts. But you never would have known it was the same team on the floor against the Rams earlier in the day. Wilbur was as hot as a pistol as he scored 20 points and Wallace netted 19 in another strong effort. Stone complemented them with a strong inside shooting attack as he flashed 15 points. Burnett played a solid game and pitched in with nine points. Eight of the Rebel points came from the foul line. The Rebels shifted their running and gunning game into high gear in the early moments and Kenner players were reduced to roles as spectators at times. The Rebels had all the offensive arsenal on display. Wilbur with his long range jumpers, Wallace and Burnett with drives, and Stone from the inside, and it was one of the more tech- nically perfect games Port had played in recent times. Kenner is a perennial powerhouse in Peterborough cage action and this year they sent all three teams to COSSA. But LOSSA is the far superior basketball region and it proved it again this year, Adam Scott midgets were the only non-LOSSA team to gain entry into the finals. The junior and senior finals were rematches of LOSSA finalists. LSHL play-offs by Danny Millar The Lake Scugog Hockey League opened its best of five first round playoffs, Sunday, February 21 with both favoured teams winning by wide margins. Oshawa beat Bethany 5-2 and Sonya upended Port w Perry 7-3. Port led 3-1 mid- way through the second period and threatened to take its first win of the year.
