This speaking contest is for children from Grades 6, 7 and 8 and draws from Brechin in the north to Port Perry in the south. Julia Bryan shared first place and Crystal Tremble was runner- 'up. Both girls were chosen by the Port Pérry Lions Club because of their winning per- formance at the speaking contest held recently by the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. TN J Fire protection from Uxbridge will cost Scugog Twp. more The cost of fire protection for citizens in the northwest corner of Scugog is going to cost the Township more money this year, possibly a lot more. Members of both Scugog and Uxbridge council concluded at a joint meeting March 3 that the agreement between the two Townships needs to be changed, but no firm decision was made on how much more Scugog will pay for the Uxbridge Fire department to provide protection for the residents of that area of Scugog Township. Under the terms. of the agreement which has been in effect since 1974, but has not been changed since 1977, Uxbridge Fire department responds to - call from residents living in a 9000 acre section of Scugog bounded roughly by the Brock-Scugog border on the north, Regional Road 8 on the south, the Marsh Hill Road on the east and the Scugog- Uxbridge border on the west. Uxbridge Mayor Bill Ballinger told the joint, meeting last week that the present agreement calls for Scugog to pay Uxbridge $6 per hour per man for each fire call answered; a flat to book your table for our X 2nd ANNUAL rate of $250 per call for the fire truck; plus an annual retainer fee of $1500. Mayor Ballinger said that currently Uxbridge fire- fighters earn about $8 per hour, so in effect Uxbridge had been losing money when the department responded to a call in' Scugog. The meeting was told that this year, Uxbridge firefighters will probably earn in the neighbourhood of $9 per hour while fighting a fire, or a full $3 per hour more than the agreement with Scugog calls for.
