Port Perry is host this year for the Ontario Central- Region "B'" Ringette championships involving 23 teams and almost 400 young girls aged 7 to 17 who will be competing. Hosting this tournament is "a "very large under-taking for our Association," Doreen Kendall told the Star last week. Mrs. Kendall is in charge of tournament publicity, and she said the Association began work on preparations last September. The Part Perry Association asked the provincial organization last year if this community could host the 81 Central Region tournament. Last year the tournament was held in Hastings. The preparations for the tournament have been enormous: everything from trophies and ribbons to lining up billets for some 90 players for this Saturday night. Coaches and managers who stay overnight are responsible for their own accommodations. by Don Steele After round robin play, the Port Perry Pearce Auctioneers were tied with Markham. As a result, a special home dnd home mini series had to -be played to determine who would move on in playoff action. Markham defeated Port 5-3 in total goals in the series, eliminating the Auctioneers from further play. The first game was in Markham. The final score was a 2-2 draw. Scoring for Port Perry were Brian Appleby from Chris Legere, and Clair Cornish, unassisted. This was a fine especially Ryan LaRocca who was very steady between the pipes. The second game was played in Port, with the Auctioneers going down 3-1. Markham was first on the scoresheet late in the first period. Still in the first, Clair Cornish tied the game at one. Markham got one more in the second period and a final marker in the third period. Qver the season, Port Perry and Markham played six printing a program to buying effort by all tearh members, - -- The Association" has held organizational help from the provincial Ringette body and from groups and companies in this area. } Flamingo Vachon for example has donated money to pay for the ice rentals; Coke will supply soft drinks and Cadbury's has- donated chocolate bars. Local Guides and Path- finders have agreed to act as hostesses for the out of town players, and members of the Scugog Fire Department will be on hand during the four day event if first aid is needed. . The Port Perry Ringette Association is in its fourth year of operation and has about 40 girls registered for this popular winter sport. Mrs. Kendall says the Association hopes that staging this tournament will focus attention on the sport and encourage more young girls to play next year. Port Perry has three teams entered in the Tweens, Junior and Belles age group. Port Perry does not have a team in the youngest age group called Petites. Out of town teams include Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering, Stayner, Oro, Lindsay, Mariposa and Ajax. Tournament convenor is. On March 22nd, Port tournament travelled to Ambherstview for the annual Ernestown Novice Tournament. We faced Picton in game one, and defeated our opponents 4-0. Scoring for Port Perry were Brian Appleby, Jarett Harman, Scott Menzies and Jeff Mills. Assists were awarded to Jeff Mills, Scott Menzies, Eric Grosvenor, Michael Butt, Brian Appleby and Doug Adams. Jarett Harman was awarded the M.V.P. in the game for the Auctioneers. In the second match, we met a very. strong club from Kanata. Port was outplayed from the opening whistle, and went down 7-1 to this fine team. Ports only goal was scored by Clair Cornish with 1:29 remaining in the game. Clair played a strong game for Port and was awarded the M.V.P. in the game for his team. On" March 28th, the Auctioneers were entered in For those who don't know about the sport of Ringette, it is similar in some respects to hockey. However, the sticks have no blades and the "puck" is a disc with a hole in the middle. There is no body checking allowed and strict rules against carrying a stick above the shoulders "are enforced. There are five skaters and a goalie on the ice at one time. The first game in this tournament is Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. between Ajax and Pickering, and the first Port Perry team to see action will face off at 8:00 p.m. against a team from Lindsay. Games "will contin on Friday evening and then all day Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. The final matches will be held on Sunday." On Saturday afternoon starting at 1:00 o'clock, there will be an hour long official opening ceremonies involving all players in the tournament. Admission is $1 for adults with senior citizens and children under 16 getting in free. Staging a tournament of this size is something of a feather in the cap for the Port Perry Ringette Association - and. prganizers are confident spettators will witness some first rate competition. Novice @ squad ousted the Uxbridge Tournament. In the first match, Port dominated completely, defeating Beaverton 13-2. Scoring for Port Perry were Clair. Cornish with 5 goals, Jeff Mills 4 goals, Brian Appleby 2 goals and 2 assists, Jarett Harman and Sean Bradbury 1 goal each, and - Chris Legere, Adam Cummings, Danny Maw, Scott Menzies each with an assist. The second game of the day was with Sharon. Port was leading 3-1 at .the start of the third period. On goals by Clair Cornish 2, and Brian Appleby with Michael Feasby and Sean Bradbury drawing assists. Sharon came back and tied the game at 3, before Jeff Mills sent Port on top again. Then, with 13 seconds remaining in the game, Sharon tied the match 4, facing overtime. The normal overtime period was waived for some reason unknown, and a 10 » minute period was to be played with goaltenders removed. The action was end to end, with close checking the strategy for both teams. (Turn to page 16) . [See story for details.] Junior softball team ready for season by Danny Millar Port Perry makes its entry into Junior C softball this summer when Bob Knapp takes a squad of -17 young 'men into the Oshawa City and District B division and into the all-Ontario tournament in August. Up until last season, Port always had Midget and Juvenile teams but this year most of the current crop of juveniles graduated and saying "It takes 17 guys to win," the team hopes might be keyed on the right arms of Kevin Walker and Tim Thompson and the-bats. of Steve Redman, Greg Fedyk, and Mike Healey. At this point, Coach p was unsure if hard hitting infielder George Burnett would be available. He played on the team in midget and first year juvenile as well as part of last season many midgets remain at thes----but does have extensive younger level for a second year. The step up into the top level of- -amateur softball had been debated for at least two years before Coach Knapp and Port Perry Executive Vin Walker decided to move up. The move was considered last year when several local players had one year of junior eligibility remaining, but nothing ever came of that plan. They all. played intermediate instead. Coach Knapp said he was approached by several athletes who played last season as Juveniles but were too' old to play there for another year. He stated that he wants to move up with them after taking them through Midget and .two years of juveniles. He definitely will be at the helm this season, aided by Bill Fewer and Walker. He said he is still looking for other coaches. The mainstays of the team will likely be returnees from: last 'season. Though he wouldn't suggest names, committments with Junior A hockey in London. Coach Knapp did say he believes they have the talent to be a contender within the Oshawa circuit. "I"definitely think we're going to be a good ball club in the league," he affirmed. He added that they should have done better last year when they were near the bottom of the same league. The B division will consist of nine teams. He said they by Doug Moore On Saturday, March 28th, the Marj Tripp Real Estate team became the champions of the Atom Houseleague by defeating the Swamp Garage team by a score of 6-1. Swamp Garage started off fast with an unassisted goal by Derek Slack, but after that it was Marj Tripp Realty all the way. Scoring for the Marj Tripp" had some problems in regaining their spot as Oshawa officials felt they should be moved to the tougher A division, which ineludes junior teams from - Stouffville and Oshawa, since they had switched to junior. The juniors will be sponsored by Mother's Pizza, who bankrolled them as juveniles last year. They will be sporting the same gold and black uniform that they did in the past. The juniors have not started workouts yet but will be commencing as early as two weeks from -now, weather permitting. Coach Knapp said he would appreciate hearing from more interested players. He said that the ideal situation would be a turnout between . 30-40 - which would create sizeable competition for berths on the team. Atom champions team were Tim Alsop with two goals, Shawn Philips, Mathew Durward, Neil Mark and Stephen Armstrong with one goal each. Assists went to Tim Alsop, Shawn Philips and Craig Free.
