Ty VL RY" eR ATLA NTR ' A Arp High School basketball players compete at Peterborough clinic by Danny Millar ..Three members of Port Perry High School basket- ball teams competed in a one day clinic and shooting contest in Peterborough, Saturday, May 2. Robert Burnett, Stan Glass Jr., and Richard Allsopp journeyed . from Port Perry to the clinic. - Their trip was arranged by senior Rebel coach , Paul "Arculus." He explained later that the event was sponsered by the Chiquita Banana company and was held at Thomas A Stewart school. The program serves as a screening process to form- ulate a provincial and then federal team to feed the Olympic program. This meeting was part of the Eastern Regional tryouts. The best of the seniors would be taken and offered a tryout with the team, and if successful, subsequent provincial and national teams. ) The three Port Perry youths entered are on comp- etitive teams at PPHS. Burnett broke in as a first year student to earn a start- ing role on the junior team. Glass was a reserve player on that lossa winning squad. mid-way through the season as the starting center on the ill-fated midget team which agonized through a winless season. Coach Arculus explained that this selection process serves as an alternative to the high quality of college basketball where the Americans find their . Olympic players. Since Canadian Universities do not offer athletic scholarships and do not emphasize basketball to the extent that the National Collegiate Athletic Association does in United States, they don't have "that standard of quality. Therefore, they are forced to locate talent sources in other areas, such .. as this contest. Coach Arculus also said that, to his knowledge, no one from Port has ever partaken in this selection process before this year's crop did. He said they received the information at the school last year but no one responded to it. This year, the information came to Arculus via Stan Glass Sr., the president of the Scugog Arena Board, who passed it along. Since most of the players, if not all, chosen would be seniors, the Port Perry entrants would stand little chance of making the grade this year. All are in either their first or second year. : There is also an instruc- tional basketball camp held for high school players each PPHS has had several of its students enrolled at them, Glass Jr. and Burnett among them. Senior Paul Van Camp and Kira Cope stand out as the bellwethers of the team's offensive in this category. Both have been on the team in previous years and have enjoyed some success. Both have looked fluid in recent workouts and, though it would take a big break, this could be their year. Second year runner Sarah Johnson returns off last year's LOSSA performance looking for advancement. The team lost one key member to a rather startling retirement early in April. Junior Scott Farndale, a specialist at 400 and 800 meters, finished a strong third place in qualifying heat in a strong field at the York University meet April 3 and then packed in his gear shortly thereafter. He also ran impressively last year. There are several other calibre, well rounded athletes who did'nt come out for the team this season, which is one of the reasons for the new look the entire team has this spring. Peter Stone, a field event com- petitor, did not work out after basketball ended. Todd Wilbur, a long jumper and sprinter, didn't come out. The same can be said for Mark Phillips, and Kevin Harris. All four were on the team last year, played basketball, and then did not return for track and field. Complete "Woodchuckin" Accessories Rifles, Scopes, Ammo, Reloading Components. Gone are record setters Mike Patton (senior high jump) and Tim Hockley, (Midget shot put). In their places appear names like Colin Stone, Warren Nicholishen, and Ed Raffin. Stone is a high jumper, Nicholishen a shot putter, and Raffin a javelin thrower. A few girls have also been throwing the javelin well in outdoor work- outs. A year ago, Patton made it as far as fourth place in the entire province. It was his year as far as track and field was concerned. This year, no one has appeared on the horizon to ride off into the sunset with similar laurals. - WANTED - FOR 1981-82 SEASON PORT PERRY MOJACKS 'TEAM JACKETS eo SPORTSWEAR e UNIFORMS DISTRIBUTOR FOR OFFICIAL PRO TEAM SPORTSWEAR SHOES - TROPHIES - ETC. 53 Division St. N.
