NSE NE 19 Anicadlixioe SRR Vid | ALAR et WR SECU STRA, YEO Extend tennis executive positions until annual meeting in fall by Danny Millar After considerable and at times heated, discussion, the Port Perry Tennis Club moved to have all its Executive officers stand in their positions until the fall, instead of seeking re-election at the annual meeting held at the Latcham Center, Wednesday, April 29. The verdict returns Dave Nicholishen as President, Doris Bigglestone . as Treasurer, Diane Burt as Secretary, and John Scott, Winnie Tobin, Chic Carnegie Bonnie Solomon, and Mike Accerra as Directors. The meeting had intended to be an election but it was moved and subsequently carried that the present executive carry over this summer because the new officers would be entering the season with much of the work already started. It was suggested from the floor by Laurie Cooper, that the elections were being held at the wrong time of the year and should be held after the tennis season ends so the new executives could initiate their own projects. Mrs. Cooper received the support of Stan Murray, the club's professional in- structor. Mr. Nicholishen was not present at the meeting. Mr. Acerra served as chairman. He had many tough questions to field concerning the elections. There were intimations from the floor that the club was becoming a clique, and that the turnover at the executive level was infrequent. = The present leaders have been more or less intact for at least three seasons, but at the past two meetings there were no nominations from the floor at election time. Last year, Director Jack Bigglestone resigned but the other directors remained. This would pre- vent the entire group from dropping off at one time. This move also drew mixed opinions from the over 30 people in attendance. The unprecedented move to increase the term of office opened another can of worms. The raising of a Constitution was discussed after suggesting the fall elections. The PPTC does not have a constitution at this time and Mr. Cooper and Paul: Solomon, both on the softball association board, stated that it would not be'a favourable idea since there would be too many petty objections at the club's meetings. Mrs. Burt announced plans for the club to enter the Kawartha League for the third year. The team will consist of seven men and five ladies and Port Perry will play its home games Thursday nights from 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM. It runs for 10-12" weeks and begins around May 25. Port won the consolation in the loop last season. The league has also enter- tained discussions about holding similiar schedules for ladies daytime leagues and one for juniors, under 18. Mr. Acerra praised these potential programs, saying they would be good for the youngsters in the Ontario Tennis Association junior program. Director Scott spoke briefly on the upcoming tournaments that others will be hosting. He also sug- gested moving the PPTC"s tourneys to September but realized that it might be quite cold. ~The meeting began with the Treasurer's report from Mrs. Bigglestone. The club has a current balance of $1,645 not including a $5,000 corporate grant and its accumulated interest. She also announced that the club lost money on its dance.
